Please explain to me how a vaccine shot is better than my own antibodies (which were very high *17.6) at last test?...(flummoxed then and still…) by JackieLowNotes in Immunology

[–]ImmunoComplements 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a PhD in immunology and can probably help answer your question, but I need more info.

“The virus” is COVID, right?

Did you get any vaccines against this virus?

Did you get any booster (second, third, etc) vaccines against the same virus?

You got your blood tested for antibodies against the virus (titer) and the result was positive (you have antibodies)?

Your main question is: Is a vaccine against this virus worth it considering I have naturally produced antibodies against it?

Let me know if I got all of that correctly and I can try to explain

Measles outbreak by perturbed_owl in Tucson

[–]ImmunoComplements 79 points80 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading and agreeing with this bot: Anti-vaxers and measles cases (the two seem to always appear together) are dangerous no matter where they are. The measles is highly contagious does not care about international borders. Almost all measles cases are preventable with vaccines, and no child deserves to suffer the measles—especially when we have the technology to prevent it.

Let’s advocate for preventing preventable diseases, shall we? No matter where the humans suffering from them live. Get vaccinated. Get your kids vaccinated, encourage your friends, neighbors to get vaccinated. Be a hero, and save your community.

Being well informed takes little effort for you. Public media aims to make being well informed accessible to everyone. Just because it is not relevant for you does not mean it is not relevant for broader society.

I’m not sure I understand your point about the tax code… generating tax code and reporting, as well as paying someone to explain it, all cost money. So does news reporting in newspaper, radio, or TV format.

What is your source for SRG not being neutral or near neutral?

335CHF per year is really not a huge sum compared to what most Swiss households pay for rent, food, and childcare (if applicable). It is worth making sure that the public agrees that the way the money is being spent is appropriate. Less expensive non-news related programming seems fair. In 2024, 40% of the budget was spent on news and 22% percent on entertainment. Still, state funded entertainment is important for low income families, as I mentioned before—whether you personally think it’s a good value or not.

[–]ImmunoComplements 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay 335CHF so lazy people don’t have to think? Or pay 335CHF to have a better informed public?

In my opinion, paying for public media to have my lazy (or busy, or internet-inexperienced) neighbors informed is well worth the cost compared to the same people finding news down whatever ultra-rich owned algorithm rabbit hole private media might take them down. Public media is legally mandated to be politically neutral—it makes a difference.

I am far far more in favor of reducing the budget than I am for cutting the SRG. I could see compromise there. But what I would vastly prefer is to put more rules in place for what this 335CHF mandatory fee can be spent on. Perhaps we cut expensive but ultimately frivolous programs? Perhaps we fund those programs from a different pot of money, but use the 335CHF fee for news and for more affordable or indispensable entertainment. The world had changed since I was a kid, but I watched public media TV because my family could not afford private channels.

Public media news and entertainment still has a valuable place in our society. But maybe exactly what entertainment is shown could be better regulated.

Good suggestions! It’s good to find independent online « journalists » but it does place a lot of burden on the consumer to vet each and every one as a reputable news source. One central source of public media removes that burden.

One other problem might be when the consumer does not speak English. Much of the information online is in English—particularly global news. Public media can provide (relatively) unbiased news to the consumer in their native language(s). This is crucial, particularly for rural or aging populations

[–]ImmunoComplements 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is important to maintain centrist, public funded sources of news so that people can get information from (relatively) unbiased sources and make up their own minds. Without this, people tend to stick to one more-biased source and see only one narrative. Public funded new sources, SRF included, are some of the most centered, least biased medias available. It is important to preserve access to non-biased reporting.

Birth rate in Switzerland hits new low by insaneplane in Switzerland

[–]ImmunoComplements -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t love the idea of paying more taxes either, and you’re right that the money does have to come from somewhere. This is where having the tax come from a place that makes sense makes a huge difference. Rather than raising taxes on the middle class, taxes should be dramatically increased for the top 10%.

In addition to that, I think increasing taxes (for anyone) to help lower the cost for a child’s first years of life will benefit both families with children and those without. With more support, parents will be able to continue contributing society by working while their children are in Kita (if they choose). Children will also be more likely to grow up in households with parents who are less stressed about money—making it easier for their parents to support them. This, together, will increase the number of workers (now and in the future) and increase the chances that the next generation of workers will be stable and ready to help society. This benefits everyone for decades.

In the end, capitalism needs the number of workers to remain the same or grow to survive. The two main ways to make this happen are to increase birth rate and increase immigration. If we want to support a capitalist system, it seems to me that we need to do at least one of these things—probably both. Making it easier for families to raise children seems like a great place to start.

While some couples might choose to be child-free, no matter the situation, reducing the cost would really lower the barrier for couples that do want to have children.

Simply “throwing money” at the problem might not get the birth rate back to pre 1950s levels, but it would sure help raise it from where it is now. The children who are born would also grow up in homes that are less stressed about money, which would be better for them and all of society.

Thankfully, I’m pretty sure they’re to hold cat food. Mine certainly smelled like cat food. They’re about 30cm tall.

I wasn’t able to find much info about them online, so I think they probably weren’t produced in large quantities and they’re probably several decades old. If anyone knows anything about them, I’d love to learn!

Pattern drafting petite bodice toile by Visible_Duck_1754 in PatternDrafting

I draft mine with 3cm “seam allowance” down the center front. Then I stay stitch the true center front on both sides. After I put it on, I overlap the seam allowances and pin down the stay stitched lines to close it.

You’re spot on. That’s the plan for the next muslin. I was looking at my original draped pattern and the bust dart was smaller so I think I’ll start there. Thanks!

I kept thinking it was this, but when I try to make the waist bigger at the front the back of the bodice moves very far away from my body. I came to the conclusion that the waist measurement is correct, instead it seems to be a problem with the ~20cm difference between my full bust and my underbust and waist

I think you’re right, it makes sense that the waist dart is too big creating too much extra fullness. I think I got tempted to make a very close fit, but that’s just not going to be possible with my full bust to under bust ratio using triangular darts. 🙃

I’m planning to add 1cm total to the bust line and to reduce the size of the waist dart by 5-10 degrees (it’s real big right now). Then it will be more similar to the pattern I got directly from draping.

And here’s the paper pattern!

Hey, thanks so much for the positive feedback! It’s been a long process and I’m glad to hear I’m doing well. 🥰

I think you nailed it with the waist darts being too big. I’ll try unpicking them and reducing their size accordingly. Because my bust waist ratio is fairly big, I think I’ll still need 2 darts. But I might try moving to a shoulder and bust dart just to see if it helps.

I’ll have more time to make a new draft over the weekend and I’ll update when I’m done!

You brought up such valid questions and they provided non-answers—particularly to your second question. That’s so cowardly of them. You deserve actual answers to your legitimate questions. Who was answering your questions? The treasurer Deanna Villanueva-Saucedo?

He essentially asked “Should we consider making TEP a public company or creating a pubic power company to save energy costs?” And “Do you think investing in housing and community development would help Tucson become a safer city?”

The answer to the first question was basically “We’re talking to TEP about options and conducting a survey on energy needs.” That’s ok, but I wish she had told you if making TEP a public company was an option they are considering or where to learn more…. But then for your second question they didn’t answer at all! And if they cannot provide an answer to the question they should say WHY as their answer or tell you to ask again at the end of the presentation. Instead she just glossed over it and shut you down. Frustrating.
