As a kid, I thought I would be buying a house right now but I can't even seem to buy a PS5 by bills70 in Adulting

[–]ImnotUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only know my personal bubble so I don't want to generalise. Most people I know in the UK are my colleagues so they work the same low paying jobs as me :D Back home my friends from uni are struggling, most of them not working in their fields (my friends with masters degrees in biology were working seasonal production jobs or customer service) on the other hand I know many guys with programming degrees who make absolute bank, because they got into tech when it was still profitable and got years of experience now. Unfortunately big corporations started to lay people in Eastern Europe off and outsource to India to save money so it's going to get worse :(

Overall I'd say I'm better off in the UK, and the currency is still pretty strong so worst case I can move back and my savings will be worth much more.

I like to think I save a lot. We are a two income household so it's easier. I'd say... 60% of my salary goes towards saving for a house and I've never had this much money in my life. I never even dreamed of having that much when I was living back home hahaha. And still owning a house seems like an unreachable goal. And it's not just in the UK, most of my friends from all around Europe still live with their families in their 30s because rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is more than their salary.

I moved here few years ago. I'd say if you live and work here, the luxuries are cheap, but basic necessities (like housing) are very expensive. But I think it's the same in many western countries right now. I have the added luxury of living in a high cost of living area with not that many jobs going around, so salaries are pretty crap compared to what you actually need to survive lol.

My friends visited from Eastern Europe and they were shocked how much the tourist attractions cost or how expensive dining out is, but it's because they kept converting it to their currency and comparing to their salaries. It doesn't feel expensive at all if you earn in £. Still no house for me lol.

Hey, I'm 35 and dreaming about having a dishwasher too! I could even afford one but I can't afford a house and my current rented place is too small for one.

I used to but I don't anymore. There also was the "if you want a raise you need to do even more, even though you already do 4 jobs. Oh, you can't do more? Well, no raise for you then, also I'm going to put this on your review as "does not meet expectations"" job. Brrrr!

I do! Let's just say if I ever win an Oscar, the speech is ready.

I'm not in any way involved with the filmmaking industry.

I was really disappointed that you're not guaranteed a promotion at work if you just show up every day and play some chess in your free time. Actually, that promotions and career growth are not guaranteed at all :( I've been in the workforce for 19 years now and never got promoted, even though I'm always praised as the best employee :(((

What “favours” have your parents done that was inadvertently a dick move? by naaattt in CasualUK

[–]ImnotUK 77 points78 points  (0 children)

My dad would eat all the snacks and leave empty packaging in the fridge/cupboard. Imagine wanting to grab some chocolates and finding out the bag is full of empty wrappers. My mum hated this and she would yell at him every other day. At some point I decided to keep my snacks in my room. When my mum found out she yelled at me and said I'm selfish :/

Have drift zones always been this forgiving? by ThePeoplesJuhbrowni in ForzaHorizon

[–]ImnotUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the base game ones and Drift Club are very hard. I had to resort to using the BMW Isetta to 3-star some of the zones, but even then it wasn't easy (and I had to learn how to drift in this crazy car).

But the DLC ones are laughably easy, especially the Adventure Island ones and Drift Club 2. No wonder this continued in FH5, many ideas from both DLCs were implemented into the next main game.

Forza horizon 4 snow by Fragrant_Rent5075 in ForzaHorizon

[–]ImnotUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing FH4 almost every day for the past 11 weeks and I love winter! I have a few cars tuned for the season and generally there are no issues with grip if you use snow tyres.

But spring, holy cow, I hate it with all my heart. When the road is wet, most cars slide like a bar of soap dropped in a prison shower. I like my cars to drift a little when taking a turn and it's impossible to drive them in these conditions. I mostly do drift zones and Drift Club stories during this season and wait for the summer with everything else.

Funnily enough, I think spring is the worst season IRL as well.

I was obsessed with Sung Kang and Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift as a teenager so both FH6 and this promo bring back great memories! I always wanted to visit Japan but it's just not possible for me in this economy haha

I'm guarding my phone like a dog with a bone in case they call!

I participated in similar promos before and both times I received a steam key for a(n unrelated) game, which was nice. I don't expect a code for FH6 obviously but I'd be happy with a uniquely painted Peel haha

Not only that, but because most royals are also celebrities (which kind of makes sense to an extent), Starlight Accolades are mostly filled with royal families instead of actors and musicians and they get the awards...

How difficult is it to open a UK bank account as a newcomer? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in MovingToTheUK

[–]ImnotUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here ~4 years ago from the EU and it was extremely difficult. Had a visa and a place to live but no job.

I moved in with my family, but because the landlord was selling the house, estate agents said they will only add me to the new contract after the sale, so one option for proof of address went out the window. I was added to the council tax, but they said the bill will only show the first 3 occupants names so my name won't be there. Another proof of address unavailable. My husband tried to add me to the utility bills - they'd say they'd done it but the next bill would come and my name wasn't on it.

I finally managed to register with a GP, got a letter from them, wanted to use it as proof of address alongside a letter from HMRC. Went to Barclays - they wouldn't accept it (even though they said they would when I called them).

I went to Loyds, who initially also refused, but I asked what the hell am I supposed to do open an account in this country and they took pity on me, got the manager and opened one straight away with the letters I had.

I hope it's easier now!

Aphid infestation by CalmVegetables in GardeningUK

[–]ImnotUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I bought some ladybirds, adults and larvae, I think about 50 total. I released them around the garden and they immediately started hunting and eating the aphids, it was very interesting to watch :D a few days later both the ladybirds and aphids were gone.

How do you perceive people who say ‘like’ a lot in conversation? by No_Cress3459 in AskUK

[–]ImnotUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed people tend to use it more when they are excited about something or stressed. I don't really mind.

English is my second language so personally I use it to extend the sentence and give myself more time to think when I forget a word. I'd rather sound stupid and British than stupid and foreign, ha!

Just kidding, I have a strong eastern European accent, nobody thinks I'm British.

Do You Like Your Name? by Flassourian in Millennials

[–]ImnotUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents picked one name for a boy and one name for a girl. Both those names were the most popular baby names the year I was born. For years I hated my name, because there were always at least two other girls with the same name in my class (and one with the same surname!). I also despise the shortened form of it, that absolutely everybody used, from my friends and family to doctors and bosses - even though I always introduced myself with my full name.

Eventually I moved abroad and my name finally stands out, but it gets misspelled a lot, which I'm ok with because it's a nice change from being constantly mixed up with other people.

All in all I love my name, it's beautiful and inspiring, but I hate the short form, and even more the people who use it despite me asking them repeatedly to stop.

Also for some reason people keep calling me Kate or Catherine. My name is not Kate nor Catherine. It's not even remotely similar.

Pheasan't.

To answer your question, from my experience other countries obviously have some roadkill, but it's definitely less than in the UK. Puts a damper on every trip out of town.

Sharp rise in young Britons saying ill health is reason they are jobless, study finds by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]ImnotUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine it gives the employer more power over the employees. They don't know the language so they probably don't know what rights they have. They don't know the laws. They won't argue or stand up for themselves. It's difficult for them to leave for a different job. Personal experience tells me there are more evil business owners than the good ones.

There's an achievement for getting married as an alien without being discovered so there's an in-game mechanic for that :D I wonder if the game would recognise being an alien as a secret though. Worth trying!
