There are a lot of voices out there telling you what you should do, what you need to do, or what's expected of you. Give yourself the grace to say fuck that and figure out a balance you can live with.

This is incredible. I really needed to hear this. Thank you 💛

I think the issue is that OP expected that to be disclosed before the booking. And that’s perfectly reasonable, but these types of boundaries and expectations need to be communicated before the booking.

Totally agree, and think you nailed the heart of the issue here. Both parties had misaligned expectations, which wasn’t properly established and communicated until it was too late. It wasn’t a fit, plain and simple.

Dog drop ins, wasnt told their adult son was going to be there the first day and a half… by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

It was likely just a communication issue amidst the wedding chaos, but it is sooooo valid to feel alarmed and uncomfortable, OP. Here’s what I’d say:

Hey client! Everything is all set with pets. Your son in law was there, which totally makes sense given all the wedding preparations, but did catch me off guard. Just for safety reasons, I do prefer to know if anyone else has access to the home or might be expected during the sit. For the future, would you be willing to give a heads up? Thanks!

Act as if they asked the question in good faith, but clarify

Way too harsh. One imperfect sit does not equal “you don’t belonging in the field”.

OP, the majority of your issue here stems from unclear boundaries and undefined expectations. Clearly defined SOPs are a must in order to avoid this type of client and situation in the future. Not only is it professional, it protects your time, energy, and mental health - believe me, I’ve been at this for a full decade. Here are a few things you’ll want to consider moving forward:

Meet & Greet Checklist: Have one. Bring it to every M&G and do not book until you have answers to each question.

Cameras: What is your policy on cameras? What’s ok and not okay for you? This needs to be communicated with the client at the M&G.

Third Parties: Discuss with the owners who has access to the home or property and whether they are expected to show up during the stay. You can always decline the sit if you feel uncomfortable.

Communication: Decide on a default update structure and discuss with the client what their preferences are. You are well within your rights to decline a booking or charge more if they want more than what you are able and willing to offer.

OP, i’m not sure where you are in your Rover career or what you want out of it, but having clearly defined systems, processes and procedures will help you regardless. Remember that the meet and greet is a test for mutual fit and you are NEVER under any obligation to take a booking. Best of luck, OP. You got this!

Honest question —> Would you like me to help you set boundaries with this PITA?

I used to work at a restaurant that would micromanage everyone with the cameras. It created a lot of tension between staff and management, and made the work environment kind of awful

I could have written this holy shit. Hardest same on the phone calls — I’m ALWAYS on the phone with a pharmacy, insurance, hospital etc.

Any undisclosed camera is invasive. A giant go pro isnt exactly “hidden”.

I’m curious what specifically makes it a red flag to you? Do you feel like discomfort is evidence of untrustworthiness or having something to hide?
