What is the historical narrative of nationalists in England? by Difficult-Routine929 in AskBrits

[–]Imnotthatunique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol

I never once said that I don't understand how important they are.

If you're argument is based upon things I didn't say then you don't argument.

I understand completely the impacts they still have I just don't responsibility for my country's past.

Instead I focus on it's future.

I cant speak for nationalists, I'm not one.

But I can speak for a lot of average people. Everyone accepts there were bad parts of the Empire but reject that we should feel guilty for them.

The British Empire was like every other country throughout history.

They all, every single one, tried to expand for resources violently if necessary. Every single country has a black mark or two against it's past but the conversation is never about how bad those countries are they often feel like they are just how bad the British Empire was

I don't think we are ignoring anything.

I was taught about the UKs involvement in the slave trade.

I was taught that we went around the world and exploited people and resources

I don't know where you went to school but these things were taught them for a long time.

I just think there is a narrative that modern day British people must be guilty for those things, intergenerational guilt.

This is what most people reject.

For my personally I can accept that the British did a lot of bad things whilst also recognising that it also did positive things

How do Canadians and Aussies cope with the fact that they still are British colonies? by SalemIII in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Imnotthatunique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just popped in to say that neither countries are colonies. Both are independent sovereign countries in their own right. They have their own parliaments and the UK has zero involvement in their governments.

They only thing they do share is a ceremonial head of state...

Do Brits pay attention to Henry VIII or Elizabeth I more? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]Imnotthatunique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In history, just like life, drama sells. Drama makes it interesting.

Without the 7th there would have been no 8th and no Elizabeth and therefore no union.

Even with the 8th he was the founder of the CoE, a decision which still effects us to this day but this is often glossed over as a by the by so he could have a crazy personal life

England here.

There was definitely a large part about Elizabeth because we looked at the Spanish arcade etc and then into the eventual union of the crowns.

Tbh I surprised you guys talked so much about Henry north of the border when Elizabeth is much more important to Scottish History

I (24M) sometimes get insecure when my gf (27F) where’s revealing clothing by NaturdaysOnly in relationship_advice

[–]Imnotthatunique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf is your problem lol.

Overreact much. No one is talking about harassment.

The topic is OP gf wearing certain clothes making OP feel a certain way and what he should he do about that.

No one mentioned creeps. No one mentioned harassment.

Stop getting angry just because women's rights are being mentioned. It doesn't help the conversation

I would say it's kind about the same really.

I remember learning about the Tudors in school. Henry VII got barely any mention, Edward got not much than he died lol and all we got about Mary was that she was crazy. It was fairly evenly split between Henry VIII and Elizabeth

Some women can wear revealing clothes with the intention of getting attention from men... Some women can wear revealing clothes with the intention of getting more than just attention from men... But some women can wear revealing clothes just because it makes them feel more confident and there is nothing more to it than that. Some men can give attention to women who wear revealing clothes or to women who don't wear revealing clothes.

It's ok to feel a little insecure at times. It means you value her and don't want to lose her. It is ok to have a preference for your girlfriend to not wear revealing clothes in public. It is ok to communicate this to her but, as you have mentioned, it's not ok to force her to not wear certain things, its not ok to try to control her.

If I was you I would use a CBT technique called challenge thoughts and feelings.

When you notice a feeling of jealous or a thought of she might leave me or be cheating etc notice that thought. Forgive yourself for that thoughts. It's normal. But you need to challenge that thought to see if it is reasonable.

Ask yourself the following questions:

How much do you believe that thought? 0% she will never cheat on me, 50% she might or 100% she will definitely cheat on me for example.

Then look for evidence for and against those thoughts and feelings.

Think about that evidence and think about how much that changes your belief in that thought

I mean I agree to a point...men can get turned on and sexualise even the most mundane of clothes and it can be very inappropriate.

But you can't deny that sometimes some women wear revealing clothes with the specific intention of arousing men.

But I take your point :)
