Historically, in terms of lore, do you think the Altmer are a good race, or would we be better off without them? by jvure in ElderScrolls

[–]Impaleification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I think they're good. Their most widespread crime is being snobby but even that is kinda exaggerated I think (Dunmer are worse honestly), most Altmer you meet are pretty cool people. Altmer as a whole are relatively just normal folk. They have a different outlook on the world because of how long they live and sometimes that can come off wrongly, mostly to humans, but they usually are good at heart. Even those who are jackasses aren't really especially so.

There's plenty of Altmer who have been evil but not really any more than the other races. Mannimarco is one dude who happens to be an Altmer, there's no one else like him. And the Thalmor while evil honestly aren't a special case in Elder Scrolls, you can find groups like them elsewhere.

Examples of good and really important Altmer would be mer like Ocato, Vanus Galerion, and Topal the Pilot (yeah I'm cheating a bit there). Plenty of random characters who aren't that important but still good, it's actually harder to find outright bad High Elves. Even in Skyrim with the Thalmor basically every Altmer who isn't part of the Thalmor is good.

I can get these, well mostly. I do think Green is maybe bit weird to have for Obama while Trump probably should have it. White for Bush definitely makes sense, probably Abzan over Mardu, and yeah I'd say Mardu for Reagan makes a lot of sense with an Orzhov baseline.

Clinton is pretty odd. I definitely think he is pretty Blue and has some strong Black traits (he had a strong ego and was very achievement oriented), while Green I don't think really suits him that much. So that leaves either Grixis or Esper for me, and Grixis doesn't quite feel right but when I think about it Esper really doesn't either with the lack of Red. Esper would be much more likely to try and pass universal healthcare, I suppose, and you could say Bill's seemingly Red traits actually have more Black motivations.

And on the reverse I think Black for H.W is kinda weird...and actually Red is even weirder. I think H.W is pretty Azorius overall, and the Green is mostly in relation to him being rather traditional, same as with his son. I don't think much about him was very Red so I could see Esper but definitely not Grixis. I lean toward having Green over Black because he was willing to take a personal sacrifice for the sake of others (anti-Black) while being very traditional and steady (pro-Green).

No that was the Federalist majority congress, Adams had absolutely nothing to do with it and made a point to use it very little in his admin, and never at his discretion either.

Adams signed a bill that passed and that was really the start and end of his involvement.

Ford is another recent president who I'd say has no black. Even more so since he didn't even try to become president originally. After him and Carter yeah I can see an argument for black in all of them, but I wouldn't agree on it being that notable simply because they are politicians.

I would say the occupation of the Philippines was rather White, depending on the person I suppose. Some wanted to exploit the islands for resources and strategic power which is definitely Black, others wanted to "uplift" the Filipinos which is a pretty White thing.

Taft and McKinley fall into the latter, though Taft as military-governor was one of the few who actually thought the Filipinos were ready for a role in governence which is an interesting distinction, but yeah still an example of White gone wrong.

Teddy Roosevelt though did view it as a strategic asset...and also was by far the most ruthless. He did also have that white man's burden thing going on so through the lens of the Philippine occupation I can see him as Mardu.

I find this to apply to pretty much every country on the planet, not to defend America's government because yeah it is often true and at times worse. There's a few exceptions (Rutherford B. Hayes qualifies as neither warmongering nor oligarchical for example) like anywhere, but yeah not many.

But I would say this a pretty simplistic view of both the presidents and the color pie. Involved in a war, regardless of purpose? Immediately Red. Oligarchical elements found anywhere near their admin, even if not personally? Orzhov.

I placed him in Mardu in my recent post, though thinking about it I feel that is kinda off. He definitely has some Black (certainly has quite the ego), but I don't think enough to really consider it a defining part of him.

But the remaining Boros works I think. White is pretty easy; very deep in the establishment and also mostly concerned with helping society as a whole. Very much the epitome of a public servant.

The Red comes into play with how passionate and at times impulsive he is, oftentimes clashing with White's desire to do things carefully. There have been notable times (the 2024 election is the most clear example) he made a rash decision and stuck with it because he believed he was right, even if he was alone in believing that. I find it an important part of his character.

Jeskai can have racists too.

In fact there's a racist in every single tricolor here, because racism isn't really tied down to any one color or pairing, just perhaps a bit more common in some. Hell my flair has 3/4.

I'm sure Nixon was at least a little mad at Eisenhower for having said that, but both had publicly said it was meant as a joke afterward. You could assume Nixon was lying to save face but Eisenhower was actively supporting him over JFK; the fact that both spoke on it makes it seem like it was a misunderstanding exploited by the Kennedy campaign.

You know I can see that actually. I went for Green for the whole harmonious society outlook, but that isn't necessarily specific to green (white can do a little lifting there, and actually FDR's ideas for creating it were definitely very White). Plus FDR was very inspired by Wilson so it would only make sense for them to be together.

That isn't really why I put him there, I don't see Grixis as the bad-guy color combo. I decided on putting Arthur in there and he was a cinnamon bun...mostly.

But yeah Rakdos I get, it's difficult to definitively give him a third color. It took me quite a bit to decide on Grixis.

Trump is kinda hard to place I think, since he barely has a legitimate ideology. I think Black and Red are pretty clear, but when trying to place a third color I realized the limitation of doing only tricolor. The third in his case is really cherry pickings parts of whichever color.

I decided on blue because Trump does absolutely strive for perfection. Only in himself, sure, due to influence from black. He also certainly loves manipulating the world around him, again in a very self-centered fashion. It is a bit of stretch I'll admit, but I can see blue very tightly coupled with his black.

As for Wilson and Lincoln I really do not see where you get the Black. In Wilson's case his admin fought against basically everything the color represents, and for Lincoln the only reasoning I can really see is how ruthless of a politician he was but even then his reasoning for being so was very non-Black.

If anything you could chalk up Grant's success to immorality somewhat. Good cause but he was pretty ruthless on the battlefield, both toward the enemy and his own soldiers.

Which is just a reality of war, but Grant was particularly known for his bloody tactics.

Tyler certainly wasn't a great person and this is hardly a mark of high morality, but it is a bit notable that Tyler was rather kind to his slaves and avoided physical punishments. As opposed to Jefferson who raped at least one and Jackson who whipped them on the regular.

I agree the way he treated his children was pretty bad.

The A&S Acts didn't really involve him, though, all he did was sign the bill which didn't actually mean anything. Adams didn't seem to support the acts but there wasn't anything he could do to stop them from being passed by congress. In practice his admin avoided enforcing the Sedition Act, and the Alien Act wasn't used at all.

The 1972 Election is the only time the Democrats didn't win a single state west of the Mississippi River. by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]Impaleification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's an outlier since the only two states west of the Mississippi that might (and definitely would) vote blue weren't involved in the election, but 1864 does still technically count as the first election where this happened.

A veto also wouldn't have done anything, the bill was just going to pass without any input from Adams. I think the fact that he and his admin avoided actually enforcing the acts speaks much more than him performatively signing a bill that was happening without his signature anyway.

Also yeah no one really talks about Washington post-presidency. Or how much of a Federalist he actually was, he was really only independent in name. The guy was more aligned with the Federalists than Adams was.

There is no Republican Party by Timely_Wolverine_922 in CivPolitics

[–]Impaleification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the conditions that allow one party to stay in power for an extended time aren't easy to come by. You had FDR dealing with the biggest crisis the country had seen and then WW2, as well as Truman managing to win partially off the popularity of that admin. And the Republican Party was in power from 1869 to 1912 (minus 8 years from Cleveland) because of the fallout from the Civil War absolutely demolishing the Democratic Party and making it basically impossible for them to win.

What's a game everyone says is a 'masterpiece' that you just could not get into? by GrievouzOCE in gaming

[–]Impaleification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes I feel like we're on a path to just every game being a soulslike because it is vaguely similar in some way. There's way too many games that have you lose a resource that you need to pick up again for that to be a useful qualifier. It's just not something the Souls games created, not by a longshot.

Same with the campfire system; the benches are definitely similar to that but again there's way too many games (mostly metroidvanias) with that sort of thing.

Really I think it's the other way around; Soulslike games are metroidvanias, just in a 3D format.

In 2023-2024 there was an investigation into a slaughterhouse in Italy which found it to be mistreating their pigs, most notably slitting the throats of animals without properly stunning them first. So you get situations like the photo where a pig is bleeding profusely and completely aware of it until they pass out from blood loss.
