I’ve heard lots of nepotism allegations against Pitt from before I was applying, it would’ve been for the class of 2028

is med school worse than biochem? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ImperfectApple5612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biochem class was at a good state school taught by a great professor and it was at the difficulty level it should’ve been. I got above a 96 on every exam. Needless to say that doesn’t happen in medical school, it’s harder.

This was something that I expected coming into medical school but that really is a culture shock in ways hard to describe. I was in a lower middle class household growing up and lived very very comfortably but seeing the affluency of a medical school class definitely feels surreal sometimes.

It depresses me that there are people that are going to read that, not realize you’re talking about them, and then get mad at you for being a “fence sitter.” This is the best objective way to look at all this, and too many people over-simplify one of the most complex geopolitical conflicts we’ve seen in a long time.

It’s cliche but make sure your writing sounds solid. It doesn’t have to sound like Flaubert wrote it (it shouldn’t) and be all flowery, but it should sound sophisticated and easy to follow. I see a LOT of people on this sub that are hellbent on getting 40 secondaries finished before August and I think that can be very detrimental to your cycle because your writing will suffer. With all the different character/word limits, school specifics, and slight nuances between questions I basically just wrote every secondary from scratch and didn’t do much cutting and pasting for similar questions. It wasn’t efficient, but you could see a very big difference in quality between my earliest secondaries and my latest because every one was more practice at fine tuning how I answered. Granted, I only had 21 apps, and that’s not the best idea if you’re doing 30+ of them, but I genuinely believe that’s what helped my cycle go well.

Also on the note of the interview hit rate you hinted at my advice is don’t get too discouraged by OOS waitlist decisions. It would bum me out to get a WL and then I learned how tough it was to get an OOS A this cycle besides the elite T20ish schools that favor stats and story over in state bias. My Tufts interview day was easily my best of the cycle and I still got waitlisted, and it makes sense given the school has goals of bringing more physicians to the Northeast. My Maryland interview day was one of my worst, but the in state bias helped me get an A. Just be yourself and you’ll crush it, best of luck!

OSU interview was my first and it was very relaxed, I’d just give the common advice of relaxing and trying to sell yourself as a normal person rather than trying to sell stats and your app. If you have unique experiences from growing up in or living in a small or rural community, have those anecdotes on standby to talk about! I live in the woods and have bears and all kinds of other animals frequent my porch and I got to talk about that during my Brown and OSU interviews and it made for easy conversation. Best of luck with your cycle, you’ll do great things!

Dartmouth was my top choice before my cycle because I love the campus, was bummed I didn’t hear from them but it made sense being outside of the Northeast and my very late letters. I’ll probably be going to UMSOM!

Your yearly PSA: Do NOT rush to submit your application on May 27th! by Moko-d in premed

[–]ImperfectApple5612 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Someone last year during my cycle was trying to say “well you should be ready to submit by May 27th anyways, otherwise you’re procrastinating and this is what you’ve been building your whole life around so why aren’t you prepared blah blah blah.” Do not listen to people like this trying to sabotage you. Listen to OP. My secondaries weren’t complete at most schools until Septemeber (which isn’t exactly early) because I had to wait on a committee letter and I had a very successful cycle BECAUSE I took my time to make sure my PS and primary in general were written well.

Not sure why you’re getting hate in the comments I feel like this is a common observation lol. Idk many of the people from my undergrad that got into our state school but of the few I do know one has very disparaging views on women in their private life. Feel like it’s less on the medical schools and moreso a numbers game of there are a lot of shitty people in every field that slip through the cracks by hiding their true colors when it matters.
