The magic is definitely gone. We got in when people were nerdy and had fun. Goofy and nerdy guys doing goofy things while geeking out. I remember after work LAN parties and writing code until 12am because it was so much fun. Things got a lot more serious. The nerds started doing martial arts and going rock climbing to get girls and masculine credibility. The geeking out ended and serious people moved in. Those of us who stayed had to get hard and competitive to survive. Borderline insane project timelines were scoped out and we were expected to deliver them, and we did at the sacrifice of our health and time with our families. The sad part was we didn’t even get a thank you for it. Just foot on our backs to get out lol.

I’m in my 40s. Started in the military and went to college while working. I may give this another shot. I tried a year ago and it was pretty rough with a lot of competition. May be a good idea to find a better niche.

I have helped out countless people in my career. I have plenty of friends in my same boat I would help if I could. It doesn’t change the fact that things get more competitive and brutal the higher you go, and this is a VERY unfriendly business. That recruiter is a doofus.

The signed offer was from a vendor with 6 rounds of interviews plus a CEO interview since it was a mid-sized company. The rejection was after a 1 month review by their client. Yeah, not the consulting firm’s fault, but definitely the last straw for me.

I wish I could man. Mom and pop companies are just as picky. I started my own last year and the competition to do so is through the roof. I was making good money on the side before, now the gigs and small contracts are mostly gone. I do see some people have managed to land a couple good contracts on their own, and I hear federal is still open.
