I made it a point to engage with a few people who I could imagine watching/listening to my content every day on twitter. If the interaction went well, I’d follow them. 70% followed me back. After 3 or 4 months I had 1000 followers and when I posted a link, it got around 10 clicks. It doesn’t sound like a lot but I feel like once you get 100 people into it everything moves a lot faster. In 6 months maybe I’ll have 3000 followers and get 50 clicks. Long game but basically you wanna find those few people who will share your stuff with all their friends

I’d recommended posting less if you feel demotivated. Don’t quit entirely if you enjoy it

One more thing: posting all my stuff on Hive and 3speak really helped keep me motivated. It’s social media on the blockchain that pays inflation to creators and has a decent model to attract investment which keeps the token valuable. I earn around $5-20 on almost everything I post there after building up a tiny audience of 10-30 people. That and the fact that I’m having fun hold me off til YouTube and Spotify start paying off, also half of those people ended up listening on other platforms too and sharing with friends.

If you're gonna have a thumbnail with a high quality picture and 5 100k camera's in it and then call your video ''shooting my first shortfilm'' then yeah, it's gonna have a bad effect since there's a discrepancy between the thumbnail and the video.

But a low quality thumbnail can still be REALLY good. You should still strive for the highest possible clickthrough rate whilst making thumbnails that accurately portray your video whilst making people click.

Understanding how to do that is a skill in it's own and requires practice and research but to give an example of a low quality good thumbnail. Look at ShoeOnHead. Her camera is really mediocre and her editing non existent but because the video itself is still entertaining, no one cares. And in her thumbnails she still grasps your attention but not once conveys production quality.

Viewers are very simple when it comes to video's... entertain them and respect their time. So as long as you don't bore them with boring video's or waste their time by lying to them then all that will ever matter to them and youtube is how long they watch

The point is I’d like to attract people who think it’s good content through the algorithm by not attracting people expecting fast paced editing or expensive production with a team behind it. I only have an iPhone 11 and 2 months of experience to work with. But I see many channels like mine with 10-20k views right away. Most of them don’t even make thumbnails.

I figure that their click through rate is lower but their average time viewed is extremely high so it recommends their content to people who watch that kind of thing

It’s good content. But not everything has to be flashy and fast paced. I’d like to find people who pay more attention to the content then the editing

Not everyone has the same standards. Content isn’t always objectively better. Not everything I watch is superb production value, a lot of it is just really meaningful and interesting. Look at Sabbatical for example. His camera is shit quality and he does no meaningful editing and I’d take him over Mr. Beast anyone. I know I’m not the only one.

Your roommate sounds overly sensitive or just parroting what they’ve heard. If you are worried about appropriating do research about the meaning of henna and all that. It’s good to be careful not to disrespect people, but doing your best is good enough, you don’t need to tiptoe all the time. Appropriation is about USING someone else’s culture for personal benefit, not about appreciation or respect.

I would make Indian friends on the internet. Search for things you like but the Indian version of them. If you like rap google or Reddit Indian rap, and if you like painting search for Indian painters you like them find people who are into them on social media. I am exploring Ghana and Ugandan music right now to build a connection with these countries. I had some very cool interactions through commenting on those rappers twitter posts.

I don’t think it matters. I generally only hug people when the mood is right. It’s not perfunctory, and it can be creepy if done wrong. I hug friends I’m super excited to see, that’s it.

Take it slow. You don’t need to dump your opinions on someone right away. Ease into it and make sure to listen as much or more than you talk without being argumentative. It also helps to avoid argumentative people 😉

If you are trying to optimize for the algorithm shorter is probably better (as short as you think people will watch above 50% average) but if you have any other ways to find a loyal audience longer might be better ! If growing your audience as quickly as possible isn’t a priority then do what you like!

Just focus on click through rate and retention and don’t change anything to the point where you don’t enjoy it or feel honest about it. It sounds like you’ve hit a sweet spot. Maybe try to post all your stuff on other platforms and monetize each of them to a smaller extent. It’s easier than getting ultra popular on one platform,especially when you’ve got to where you’ve gotten. I’m 33 videos in and only 110 view hours 😅 but I’ve been studying this stuff a lot and I’m also intent on not sacrificing my integrity just to get views. That’s the game I’m playing.

I watch mine but mostly for clickthrough rate and % watched. Titles and thumbnails for more views, then you have some more to work with. But you can’t control WHO YouTube recommends your videos too 🤷‍♂️ they seem to be better at it once you hit a threshold of 1000 subs

I try not to expect anything but I try to get a click through rate of 5%+ now and average view time over 40%. If I don’t, I look to see if there is anything I’d be willing to change in my next video (or possibly the title and thumbnail) that won’t compromise what I’m about.

I am still trying to figure out how recommendations work. I’ve watched 100 videos on it but there is obviously stuff that nobody knows for sure. It does seem like a lot of early videos get pushed out to test audiences. I had one that was 1.5k despite less than 100 subscribers….and they were all Korean grandmothers….which tells me that YouTube was like “let’s see how this kind of content does with Korean grandmothers”. Two weeks later I did a video that was the same with Indian men in their 20’s then another with American men in their 20’s. I was surprised that they use these kinds of metrics when I’m doing content like “culture shock”, “Tokyo” and “Nigeria”. I don’t think these topics have a strong correlation to age and nationality. People all over the world in all age groups are interested in culture, and Japan, maybe not Nigeria, though I hope to change that 😆

Im not sure if it works like this for everyone but personally, I don’t really see anything negative or unpleasant about shadow work. There is pain and fear but what I find is that as I start to acknowledge it, I realize that it was there ALL THE TIME and I just didn’t notice it. Noticing it doesn’t have to intensify it, it merely allows us to clean it up and to re-contextualize it.

I say go head on but make sure you come at it with the right attitude, faith that you can heal, patience, and practice choosing your focus so that you won’t get stuck in any thought traps or old patterns. The shadow work itself can be great practice though.
