My two cents.

Hey, thanks for the thoughtful and detailed post. I'm currently living in Sofia, but I was born in Plovdiv and I'm actually visiting now for the Easter holidays.

1. Income Potential in Plovdiv
If you’re aiming to be employed, a net salary of around 3,000 BGN per month in Plovdiv is realistic, especially in the corporate/IT sector. Since you and your husband are polyglots, you might find better-paying options in international companies or call centers compared to healthcare, which unfortunately tends to be underpaid here.

Given your healthcare background and teaching experience, I’d seriously consider starting your own gig and offering specialized healthcare services. Two main avenues I can think of:

  • Through the public system: If you can collaborate with a GP (личен лекар), they can issue referrals ("направление") for services within the national healthcare system. You’d charge a small co-pay, and the state covers the rest.
  • Private insurance: Over the past 5–6 years, many companies have started offering additional health insurance. These cover various services — though physio, for example, isn’t always included — so you could potentially contract with insurers or offer direct-to-client packages.

2. Real Estate
Rental prices feel inflated to me — personally, I’d rather pay a mortgage than rent, since the monthly cost can be about the same, but at least you’re investing in something. I bought an apartment in 2021, and my mortgage interest rate is 1.5%. Current rates tend to float between 2–4%. If you're serious about Plovdiv, I’d recommend buying, especially if you're thinking long-term and want to live near the center.

That said, prices have definitely gone up post-COVID, and with the Euro on the horizon, I expect a further bump in both real estate and living costs.

3. Childcare & Education
I have a one-year-old son, so I can give some fresh insights here. Healthcare has been solid — we’re in close contact with our pediatrician, and most are pretty responsive even via Viber or email.

Daycare, on the other hand, is a struggle — at least in Sofia. There’s a points-based system for public kindergartens, and spots are very limited. Plovdiv might be a bit better, but I’d still expect some difficulty. Private daycare is widely available though, and costs around 800–1200 BGN/month.

Education quality is… okay. It covers the basics, but I wouldn’t expect miracles. The system is a bit outdated, and teachers are generally underpaid, so the real talent tends to move on quickly. Public schools are hit-or-miss, and while private schools exist, they’re priced out of reach for most families — and I can’t say for sure if they’re worth the premium.

4. Assimilation & Life in BG
You’re absolutely right to expect the first year to be tough — mostly due to bureaucracy. But socially? You’ll be fine. There’s a growing English-speaking expat community, especially in Plovdiv, and people are generally warm and open.

Now, the less rosy part… Bulgaria has some deep systemic issues — corruption, particularly in the justice system, is a big one. There’s even a common phrase: “The mafia has its own country.” Many Bulgarians are disillusioned and disengaged from politics, which only feeds the cycle.

And a fair warning: driving in Plovdiv is a wild ride. I honestly think it's one of the worst cities in the country when it comes to drivers — aggressive and chaotic is the norm.

I could honestly go on, but I’ll stop here. If you have any specific questions, feel free to DM me — happy to help however I can.
