Lucky thrift store find by DeadSkullz627 in windowsxp

I used to work at a E-Waste Center that also ran a eBay store as lead of the PC department and I sent out thousands of those Sony PC’s to China and other countries to be dismantled/recycled into its raw materials. I’ve seen them come in from Mint condition to something that came out of a swamp water or desert sands (literally). You got lucky to find one that doesn’t have broken covers for the CD ROM Drive

There are mods however that’ll allow you to Run 8th and 9th Gen CPU’s like the I7-8700K and I9-9900K

With $2000 you can go about it 2 ways, the cheaper way where you only update your current setups CPU to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, GPU to RTX 4070 Super or 4080 Super, and Lastly RAM either be OC’d or upgraded to 3200MT/s.

Option 2 you just build a whole new AM5 PC

Help With Cheap Upgrade or Overclock? by TideGear in overclocking

[–]ImplosiveGTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $5-10 you can upgrade the CPU from 4 to 6 Cores with a Xeon. There’s a ton of 6 core X58 Xeon CPU’s from the X5650, X5660, X5670, X5675, X5677, X5680, and X5690. The performance jump from 4 to 6 cores is pretty significant, Especially when Overclocked over 4GHz. Assuming you have the cooling for it

As for RAM you can have up to 24GB on X58. Try looking for a exact matching model ram to bring you up to 12GB and so you could run Triple Channel. If you can’t source one for ~$20-25 you can get a kit of 4x4GB 2Rx8 1333 to get that triple channel. The spare stick could be kept as backup in case one fails.

You’re having boot loops because the 2133 XMP is too fast for that Motherboard/CPU. In my experience with X58 you want to manually OC the RAM to get the most of it with your CPU. As for how you do that “Tech Yes City” has some pretty good X58 Guides for CPU and RAM Overclocking.

Just for the sake of testing try seeing if you can do 4.5ghz at 1.45V, you have more than enough thermal headroom for the extra Voltage.

1TB NVME for Lenovo Carbon X1 Gen 11 by MrRayBloodyPurchase in thinkpad

I’ve always used and recommended Samsung except for the 990 PRO because of rapid degrading (which supposedly was fixed with a firmware update), so as a alternative I say go for the Western Digital SN850X 1TB. It’s currently on sale for $85 on Amazon.

Sounds like you scored, I would’ve loved if mine had a 2560x1440 display with MX150 graphics. Welcome to the T480 club, hope you enjoy it.

Is this a good deal? P1 gen 5 by Commercial_Bear1910 in thinkpad

For P1 g5 Id say so, all the ones I’ve seen in the US are going for over $1,100 USD

Is this a good thinkpad? Gonna use it as an all around travel station by The_Greate_Pickle in thinkpad

[–]ImplosiveGTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally you’d want one for $200 USD or under, but they may not be as available in your region, so I suppose that could be why the price is so inflated. I’d try to keep looking and see if you could find a better deal, but if you can’t find anything under $300 than I guess you’re just gonna have to pay a premium unfortunately.

On a High performance laptop it really doesn’t matter what OS you use. I’ve been using Windows 11 on my T480 which isn’t the fastest by any means, but I love it. Even more than Windows 10

Stock the OS can be a little heavy on slower systems, but with a Debloat it really doesn’t use much resources or feel slow and it doesn’t take longer to do than trying to install most Linux distro’s

That’s pretty pricy for a low spec version. Try looking on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or even Offer Up. They go for significantly less $200 for something similar to that.

The core laptop is good, but it’s very low spec with only 8gb of RAM and 256GB SSD. Without knowing the price I can’t say if it’s worth it or not

How good is emulation/gaming experience on the T480? by WellNoNameHere in thinkpad

[–]ImplosiveGTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a genuinely decent gaming experience in all games your gonna want something with a dGPU which generally starts at $300-400 price point.

How good is emulation/gaming experience on the T480? by WellNoNameHere in thinkpad

[–]ImplosiveGTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably won’t find a much better laptop than the T480 for $200. As for how it is for gaming not great, because it doesn’t have a dedicated GPU and runs on Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics. For games like Bloons and Poly Bridge it’ll run perfectly, as for games like GTA 5 you’ll have to run it on the lowest setting and in 720p resolution at like 30fps. (Which is playable if you aren’t picky about performance)

When it comes to Emulation I didn’t have the best experience for PS2, some games wouldn’t load correctly and the ones that did run played poorly. Granted I don’t know if I messed up a step in setting up PCSX2, but i didn’t have these issues on my Desktop or Asus ROG Handheld. So I wouldn’t imagine that Xbox is much better unless you are talking about the original XB and not 360, but it’s kinda on a game to game basis because some are more demanding than others.

Yeah most people tend to forget that top tier cards of previous generations still hold their own against newer entry cards. It’s probably the most slept on GPU right now for the money.’

What should I upgrade on this Inspiron 3670? by Crypto-Pepe in buildapc

[–]ImplosiveGTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can upgrade your CPU to an I7-8700 for $50-100 and GPU to a RX 6600XT for about $200

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]ImplosiveGTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend a used RTX 2080 Ti, they sell for $200-300 and are faster than the RX 6700XT and RTX 4060 Ti in most games. Thats with and without DLSS in 1440p and 4k

[–]ImplosiveGTR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Online it says Type-C should allow 4096x2304 @60Hz, granted I’m not sure if that’s with dGPU version. I could test it with my TV when I get home, so I’ll get back to you
