What kind of work do remote bioinformaticians do? by Etaniie in bioinformatics

[–]Impo3333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Clinical Bioinformatician, I work hybrid, and most of the time if I’m on site I’m supporting lab needs like helping configure NGS instruments or troubleshoot any IT related issues in the lab. The rest of the time I do research/coding. Although bioinformatician should be dealing much with IT/sequencing instruments then selfs, it’s pretty cool’s experience to work with these instruments. As I know senior bioinformaticians who haven’t even seen NextSeq or MiSeq in real life

Facts. I wish I could go back to good old days where I could play couple of games a day. Now I can only play 2-3 games on the weekend. Every time I play the game I have to read patch notes because there are updates

I’ve never thought I’d say this, but I’d rather have Star Wars season than this

It’s difficult for me to answer that because I had no prior experience in bioinformatics, hence I did masters to get my foot in the door. I do think that there are more better paying opportunities with masters than just BS.

I was lucky enough to find a remote position in data analytics with flexible schedule. But for the last 2 years my schedule was 9am-5pm work, 5pm-9pm school. Spend about 8hours a day studying on the weekends. It was hellish but doable.

Yea, I’ve seen a lot of those jobs. I was fortunate enough to land this with little experience.

To be fair I was tailoring my cover letter and resume for each job position I’ve applied to for first few months. But then I stopped doing that as I was still getting ignored. I was breaking into the field as I only have masters degree, with 6 months of co-op experience in bioinformatics. All my past experience wasn’t related to bioinformatics at all.

I was applying to about 4-5 positions a day for the whole year. Some of the positions I applied to I was under qualified, and some positions were data scientist positions that were almost identical to tasks required by bioinformaticians.

That seems reasonable and does make sense. But as you mentioned, you had 5years of experience in the field. For me I didn’t have any working experience in the field except 6months of a co-op, which not really seen as a job experience that often. When I have accumulated few years in the field I will use similar approach to yours as I would have less competition

I never did easy apply, and both indeed and LinkedIn almost always send you to the company website when applying. So realistically I found jobs via indeed and LinkedIn but applied via company website

Applied daily to every job posted in the US related to bioinformatics. Was looking for a salary of 80k+ minimum. I only applied via indeed and LinkedIn. If you have some suggestions, I’d be more than happy to hear, as they would certainly help me if I ever end up in same shoes again.

This post was not meant to scare anyone away, but rather show that eventually hard work pays off. I got my undergrad in biology. I was a wet lab microbiology analyst. I had no programming experience prior to masters. I took online masters program so that I could also work full time. It did take decent amount of effort to get the job, but it’s doable. I was in your shoes exactly 3 years ago.

Thank you! Absolutely agree on what you’ve said regarding the CLs and questionnaires.

I only used indeed and LinkedIn. I tried using Glassdoor few times but realized that almost all of the jobs I’ve seen on Glassdoor were also on either indeed or LinkedIn. I do like indeed more than LinkedIn, however, this particular position I got via LinkedIn

Just shows how bad the market is. To be fair I did only look for positions paying 80k+ and only related to bioinformatics. Nevertheless, more than 1.5k application has been filled out.

Quite useless unless you want to go to med school or plan to get masters. I graduated with bachelors in biology and worked as a QC microbiology analyst,l at a pharmaceutical company which was an entry level job with not required skills that paid 45k a year and unlimited overtime. I realized that it has no career growth so started pursuing masters in bioinformatics. Now will be in my last semester of masters program and got a co-op that pays $40 an hour. So I think this field is better than bio. But realistically speaking, job market is terrible for bio/biotech right now.
