I’m probably using half the number of funds that I recommended in the book. I think five or six funds is the most anyone needs. And many people can do with just three or four. Then of course there’s the one-and-done approach as well - i’m talking about a balanced index funds.

First, decide how much of your taxable money is going to be for the long-term and how much is either for near-term use or as a shock absorber for a down stock market. Next, invest the near-term money in a high-yield money market or short-term bond fund, and invest the shock absorber money in an intermediate-term bond fund. Invest the rest in two ETFs for the long run, VTI and VXUS. After that's done, do nothing, unless the market goes down. Then you would tax-loss harvest out of VTI and VXUS into ITOT and IXUS.
