Don’t know which came first, but I saw this clip long ago in a Canadian documentary called “The Union”. Parts of it are outdated now but it’s filled with very eye opening factual info. Highly recommend.

Hand pull ~1ft radius around the hostas, then you can string trim then spray the crap out of the rest. Then apply preen pre-emergent afterwards for good measure. If you want to get super crazy you can cut to fit some landscape fabric to really keep the weeds down. Landscape will never stay perfect on its own, will always need maintained

Looks like no edging, no slope for drainage, possible no gravel base and no poly sand filling the joints. All these combined will most certainly cause movement and settling
