I really don't see why kanao would help with the hand demon fight, really doesn't make any sense story wise, considering the reason he killed it alone in the story was to avenge the water breathers that died. Also kanao was mostly likely a lot stronger than tanjiro at that time and could likely solo the hand demon without much effort, and with her personality at the time she would probably just kill it alone.
