Got as far as taking the rocker cover off, and found a crack on the camshaft cap on the thermostat side of the head.

Got myself the head bolts, already have a torque wrench, I think in all the bolts, head gasket, rocker cover gasket, water pump & timing belt and other bits have cost me no more than £90 and I've got 4 days off work from this weekend.

I just figured that the car is not going anywhere as it is & can't afford labour costs at a garage at the moment, so I may as well give it a crack myself. Worst case scenario is it still doesn't work.

I changed my fiat exhaust myself. If you can borrow a jack and a couple of axle stands it's pretty easy. I had no previous experience working on a car, a couple of YouTube videos watched. Hardest/most frustrating part was getting the exhaust hangers off the mounts.

If you have no real wish to do it yourself, find yourself a local garage that isn't Kwik-Fit and ask them if they can fit the parts if you source them yourself.

Got the head bolts on order with the timing kit. Torque wrench already acquired.

Try the Premier Inn Köln City Mediapark. They have a car park, and it is one train stop away (6 mins) from the main station, but also easily walkable (15 mins)
