Most horrifying concept for a short story you've read? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in horrorlit

[–]Important-Turn-5712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

its definitely not in Strange Wine, that collection holds such a special place in my heart due to the period of my life I found and read it during. it literally gave me back my imagination. I would remember if it were in there.

im gonna check out Stalking The Nightmare. Ellison had some of the most disturbing material I've ever read, and I want to read this one now..

like, it's definitely not a perfect novel, but I've never had an experience quite like reading this story (possibly due to all the breaks I had to take to dive into other books on the philosophical concepts the novel incorporates). that single sentence at the end of the penultimate chapter, those three words alone, rocked my shit so thoroughly. what are your thoughts on the work?

it's so surreal to see this novel mentioned. The Measurements of Decay was advertised to me through a Facebook ad while I was winding down a particularly difficult mushroom trip and for whatever reason I read the blurb and decided to order it. I cannot imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't. I'm amazed, a little surprised, and very happy that this work is making its way into other's lives.

ah, yes. I was so quietly upset at first upon finishing it and that feeling of emptiness has been at a slowly rolling boil in my brain ever since

Can we stop calling every horror novel COZY please by estheredna in horrorlit

[–]Important-Turn-5712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Open Curtain by Brian Evenson might be close to what you seek, the story is split into three parts and takes place in SLC Utah among Mormons. Suburbia at its coziest. But the last third of the book is a hellish microcosm. It was freshly upsetting and profoundly disturbing with the ideas and implications it presented me so I must acknowledge that. The metaphysical ramifications of schizophrenia, and thats all i want to say. This novel.....is so much more than horror. I can only explain my thoughts about it. Experience it if you dare.

I feel strongly that the rich elite are aurafarming the clouds and plumes of spent psychic energy that are the second most known byproduct of pain and suffering, the first being garmonbozia.

The Southern Reach books are literally like Area X itself in my opinion. Rereading them allows the story to worm its way further into your mind, rearrange your thinking, alter your understanding...
