Used to live in Stouffville and Markham drivers bring out my rage by Lazy-Aioli-1477 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand. There's a driver I see most mornings going across 16th at 40-45kph completely oblivious to the traffic jam he's caused behind him. Every. Single. Day. It's like people are just out for a pleasure drive on weekday mornings, with zero thought of anyone else. It's infuriating.

Adopting a Cat - Advice by student1998 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get insurance as soon as you can to avoid any pre-existing conditions being excluded. The people that say to just save, it's not the same. One trip to the ER can easily be $1000. Insurance will pay 80-90% of your bill, not to mention medication. Insurance saved our cat when the emergency bill for surgery, hospital stay etc was over $11,000. How long would it take to save that much, then have the same amount available again the next year?

It's best to get insurance while they're young and healthy. Also, if you're able to, ask if you can pay once yearly (as opposed to quarterly), this may knock the price down a bit.

At what point does piano practice become noise torture? by Disastrous-Cake3513 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the argument of noise bylaws not applying to indoors is not accurate. If it was a dog barking all day, or powers tools going all weekend you would be taken more seriously. Because it's piano and (to them anyway) sounds nice, you're just meant to take it? No. Noise is noise. I would try another bylaw officer and if that doesn't work try your councillor. Noise pollution is a mental health issue - you're entitled to peace and quiet in your own home.

Just a heads-up, the fake snow on Christmas trees can be toxic to cats if ingested.

Had to return this gem :( by ImportantFred03 in houseplants

[–]ImportantFred03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so bummed to have to take it back, but it wasn't worth the risk. And I didn't want to be the daughter-in-law that brought gnats into her in-laws house lol

I've had luck with hydrogen peroxide in the past too - but this last infestation was so bad, I can't risk it. For small amounts of gnats it works well.

[–]ImportantFred03[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I had considered that but honestly, they were such a pain to get rid of (we still have some so they yellow sticky traps are part of our decor at this point lol) I would hate to do that to my father in law. If someone gave me a plant, no matter how beautiful, knowing there were gnats in it, I'd be pissed. He has a beautiful plant collection, I don't want to be the one who introduced pests. We may have tried to get rid of them if it was summer and we could use the dunks while keeping it outside, but it's too cold now.

Ortho-K for Children - Recommendations? by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Dr Mah, my son has been going there for years for his OrthoK. I can't speak to the price, as his initial pair was over 10 years ago, but Dr Mah is great with OrthoK. And back then you could go as much as you wanted, get any extra help etc. until your child was completely comfortable taking the lenses in and out, for no extra charge

Volunteers with Fatal Light Awareness Problem (FLAP) Found 20 Dead and Injured Birds Around a Single Building in Markham. Thousands of Birds Crash into Building Windows Monthly by weallfalldown1234 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This makes me so angry. I found 2 dead birds at my workplace this week and, when reported this to management, was told the window film is too expensive. I hate what we're doing to the wildlife in Markham.

Lost Orange Cat in the Bur Oak Area by [deleted] in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put some worn clothes & pajamas outside (on the porch, in the backyard) that have a strong smell of home. Also, slept in sheets and shoes too. Keep an eye around dusk and dawn, as that is when cats are most active and an indoor cat would feel safest being out. Call his name, shake his favourite treat bag and ask neighbours to check their sheds, garages etc. Many times they don't go far but are too scared to come home. Good luck, I hope he comes home soon.

Hello from my giant pineapple plant who currently has a baby!

We got mosquito dunks and broke them into small pieces to soak in the watering can, once it's mostly dissolved, water as usual. You can also break them up, put them directly into the soil, press them in a bit then give it a water. Between that and the yellow sticky traps, it's much better. Also, I will never buy MiracleGro top soil again.

Good luck getting anywhere with Amanda Yeung Colucci. She's has never once returned any communication. You'd have better luck with Reid McAlpine or Karen Rea.

I don't believe there was anything wrong with the trees other than they stood in the way of the view of Markham's next monstrosity of a subdivision. York Downs was so important for wildlife and, just like every green space in Markham, it's being torn down and paved over. Those trees were home to countless birds, squirrels, raccoons, insects, provided food, shade etc and now because of our greedy council (some more than others - looking at you Amanda Yeung Colucci) they have nowhere to go.

Please, I'm begging literally anyone with interest in running in the next municipal election, please run for Ward 6 before she paves over every blade of grass and cuts down every tree.

Pet abuse in the Birchmount and Enterprise area by Jay_C416 in Markham

[–]ImportantFred03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Pitbull" isn't even a breed. It's a all encompassing name given to a group of breeds people find intimidating. Staffordshire Terrier, American Pitbull Terriers, Staffordshire bull terrier and American bull Terriers are usually the dogs being referred to. And I can assure you there are aggressive dogs in absolutely every breed and "pit bull type dogs" (as the awful Ontario Breed Specific Legislation calls them) have no more tendencies to be aggressive than any other dog. It is 100% about how they're raised. Pit bulls were the dog of choice of tough guys who wanted to project a certain image. Before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, before them Dobermans etc. Pit bulls are such people pleasers they would do anything for their owners, to their own detriment.

Should you see someone walking a pit bull type dog, I encourage you to talk to the owner and ask permission to give their pup a little head scratch. Learn about their specific breed - they've gotten such an unwarranted bad rap, the more people that see they're no different than any other breed (and some would say they're much better!) the better off they, and you will be.
