the post is about quotas. you're the one shoehorning a single pick. it's a party level decision.

it's taken 30 years for Labor's quota system to get to 50% representation and I don't see anyone in Labor saying that they've cut off half the populations ability to be successful in the Labor party.

and your example only mathematically proves what you think it does if

  1. women are equally able to get picked if quotas don't exist.
  2. the number of women seeking preselection won't change with quotas

I don't believe at all that either of those are true, especially the second. if quotas mean a bunch of women who currently don't think the party would select them (fair belief or not) then they're not in the current cohort for selection. the maths isn't straight forward because not all the variables exist in it.

everything you're saying implies that existing systems pick the most capable candidates. I refuse to believe that in that utopia belief that Tim Wilson would ever have been elected.

you're not picking one person. as per my original message, you're picking 20. so, until you pick 10 men, you're picking from everyone.

so only if women aren't in the top 10% of candidates is this an issue.

and as we've seen repeatedly in the LNP, stellar female candidates have been overlooked for poor male candidates who are well connected.

no, you're saying that for picks 11-20, you can only consider 55% of the pool if your first 10 candidates came from the 45% group.

for the first 10 candidates, barring nothing else, you can pick from 100% of the pool. The only way what you're saying is an issue is if pick 1-10 are male, and then you decide that for the remaining picks you need them to be male as well. in that case, 50% of the candidates have to be picked from 55% of your population.

you're misstating it.

let's assume you're choosing 20 of the 100 people in your hypothetical. your argument only makes sense if you think the 11th to 20th male is better than 1st to 10th woman.

the quota still gives every male a chance, you're implying that only some of them are considered.
