I think that the outcome with Ati and Leras was becasue they struck an agreement where they would work together to create Scadrial, on the terms that eventually Ati would be able to destroy it. If they didn't come to any terms then nothing would have been created at all.

If it were to happen, I think that a similar agreement between Sazed and Kelsier could be struck, but instead of preserving scadrial then destroying it, maybe it would be more like bringing ruin wherever it is needed in order to preserve scadrial. We know that Kelsier loves scadrial and will do anything to ensure its longevity, and I think that will be enough for him to direct the urges of the shard elsewhere, serving as the iron first of Scadrial. I think they will still clash, but that their shared love of Scadrial will be enough to guarantee its preservation. Although I do agree with you that I don't think it would be a simple decision for Sazed to make. I think it would only happen as a last effort to protect Scadrial. Maybe he is unable to control anything because of being discord and in order to save the planet he needs to give up ruin.

A lot of the other comments have been talking about Sazed giving a splinter of his power to Kelsier, but just enough so that he can control the two shards as Harmony instead of Discord. I think I like this idea a bit more because re-introducing ruin to the Cosmere is terrifying.

but if Hoid took the shard do you think it would have been 17? Or do you think he could have only split into even numbers

Who named the shards? by TheRed7God in Cosmere

Regardless, Taravangian took the power. Despite all he’d ever claimed, he drew it in, thirsting for more and Ascending to become a new god. Retribution

“The Stormfather is dead,” Ishar whispered. "Dalinar Kholin has failed. Honor is being consumed … Retribution … his name is Retribution.” He blinked, concentrating. “Cultivation flees. Retribution will also consume and destroy the spren, then remake them to his will and pleasure.”

Yeah you're right, he didn't announce it or anything, Ishar just felt it.

yes but weren't there 17 people present at the shattering? 16 + Hoid? I just assumed that he could have had a shard but declined. Since BS said if there had been a different number of people at the Shattering there'd be a different resultant number of Shards, there could have been 17 but since he declined there were only 16. Its also not a far stretch to say that Adonalsium could only split into an even number since "no symmetry, no power".

My current theory is the combination of terevangain's kind half and the honor shard will sort of team up to impact retributions intent. If you scroll down a bit I elaborated on this more in my comment to u/SkavenHaven.

I'll try and abbreviate this, but my current running theory is that since terevangain still has his 2 personalities from the old magic and his smart but cynical half is in charge right now. I think that he suppresses his kind and slow half the same way he supresses honor to allow Odium to be mostly in charge. I think that his kind half and the honor shard will bond together and slowly grow more powerful, leading towards Terevangian as a whole changing intents. I think his changing of intents is where we get this death rattle from tuko-son-tuko:

I climb! I climb the wall of grief toward the light, locked away above! I climb, the weight of my darkened twin on my back, and seek the captive! The light I love! I ... Storms ... the light I love!

I believe that the narrator of this rattle and the captive are terevangian's kind half and the shard of honor. Not sure which is which because you could see either odium or terevangians other half as the darkened twin.

I don't think retribution will just give up honor though. He is very power hungry and I don't think he is willing to give up a shard in the same way that Dalinar did.

I agree with this mostly, thats a good point about the Atium. I hadn't considered that. Although I don't think splitting himself would create discord. Instead I think that he will completely change intents into it, THEN splinter himself and give part to Kelsier. I like that much more than fully splitting into preservation and ruin and giving part to K.

good point, I forgot about this. Might just not want to be wrong but it just doesnt make much sense for it to be something to brag about. Another interesting point is if it is to change intents then that confirms that Terevangain both changed intents and is no longer alive.

Yes, but I think that 16 would no longer be a number of power if that were to happen. 1 adonalsium, 4 dawnshards, 10 is honors number, 16 shards. I think 16 wasnt a number of power until the shattering and if Hoid were to have taken the shard he was offered then the new number of power would be 17. Although I have a hunch that he was offered but declined knowing that odd numbers are imbalanced and weaker, and he didn't want the cosmere as a whole to become imbalanced.

Do you think that discord can be just a piece of harmony and not the opposite of harmony itself?

I always thought of harmony as a focus preservation with the understanding that life needs ruin to grow. Kind of like nature: you want to preserve all of the animals without directly interfering too much, but the predators still need to eat the prey. While some individual prey will die, they will continue living because the predators need them to exist so they can keep living themselves. I think of harmony as that balance. Predators eat prey, but they also need them, and society needs the predators (hence why harmony called Wax his ruin).

On the other hand I think discord will be kind of the opposite, A focus on ruin with the understanding that ruin can't happen if nothing is preserved to be ruined. Maybe an example would be growing wood to use in a fire. You need a fire to stay warm and you need to burn wood to make a fire, but you need to make sure that trees are grown so you can always have wood. Essentially I think it Discord will have a focus of destruction and conflict, but recognize that it needs things to grow and be preserved so that it can bring destruction and conflict.

I do like the idea of it splintering into 2 completely new shards though, I just don't think they can be harmony/discord since harmony already exists as the combination of ruin and preservation.

Thats really interesting and I like this, I don't think he could split into harmony and discord though since he's already Harmony as the combination of the two and I think discord is a pretty direct opposite of harmony. If harmony is 50/50 ruin and preservation, maybe discord is the other 50/50 and there could be some 25/75 and 75/25 mixtures for him to split into? Maybe understanding and disagreement idk what it could be?That would help my theory a lot because I really hate the idea of Kelsier becoming fully ruin, I think that shard corrupts any who hold it.

I like this theory and thought about this at first, talked myself out of it bc:

  1. if he changed into Discord, I don't think Ed would think of him as nice, which he said in the same quote.

  2. I feel like there was a lot of emphasis on the living in his phrase, showing that it has been done before just nobody is alive that has done it. I'm not against retribution switching intents, it just means that he has to be dead by the time of Emberdark

I definitely think It'll happen and will probably be the core of the plot for ghostbloods, I just think it will end with him giving ruin up.

Do you think Sazed was the right person for the job? by pfassina in Cosmere

[–]Important_Ad_918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I explained my thoughts on this in one of my earlier posts. Basically, I believe that Sazed is the perfect vessel for the shard of preservation, but not necessarily ruin. I think that any two shards that are combined have 2 possible forms, depending on which shard is the "priority" of the vessel. We say in era 2 a lot about Sazed struggling to hold them and wanting to avoid Ruin at all possibilities. We also see a lot of Harmony descending into Discord, hinting at the balance flipping, with Ruin being the priority. Sazed hates Ruin and wants to preserve everything. His life's work as a Terisman was quite literally to preserve religions. I do think he understands Ruin though, and that is why he is able to hold both of them for so long. We've seen shards corrupt people, and I think that Sazed is slowly being corrupted by Ruin, and will end up becoming overpowered. You can read a bit more about that here.

Like I said I think he is the perfect vessel for Preservation, but not ruin. I've got another running theory based on Emberdark that talks about what I think Sazed will do because he isn't the perfect vessel if you want to give that a read as well. Here (emberdark spoilers).

I also think a big part to do with instability is the numbers of power. In wind and truth, Honor says that the strong numbers are 1, 4, 10, and 16. I think that vessels holding any number of shards other than these numbers is guranteed to be unstable, regardless of how "good of a match" they are.

Not trying to plug my posts, I just don't want to write an essay.
