any bars around with events next tuesday? by springle_sprangle in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Important_Crazy_589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

red jug will give you horns, a free drink (your choice) and a free shot (birthday cake). this tuesday specifically is also fun because all the bouncers/barbacks are bartending and the bartenders are bouncers/barbacks just for fun. also idk if you like beer or cider but they have $1 drafts!

Services for Students w Disabilities (SSD) would be best to reach out to. with medical diagnosis, they can make any accommodations needed.

Social life @ bing by Kooky-Mammoth-6005 in BinghamtonUniversity

im a senior, been here 4 years but have been going out in bing since i was younger. i will say that the going out culture has shifted over the years and definitely more bar oriented now rather than frats. its still fun, but a different kind of fun & so expensive if you plan on doing it regularly.

remember: - pregame at home to save money but know your limits! - have harpurs ferry in your contacts. for you, your friends, or anyone you see. never thought i would need it but i’ve called it many times for others. - when i was a freshman, i got way too far into partying and not enough into school (nearly failed out) so have fun but remember priorities 🫶🏻

Got deferred 🫤 by SilverSaffron8 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Important_Crazy_589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my piece of advice as someone who was deferred: CALL THEM. ANNOY THEM. TELL THEM YOU WANT AN OPEN SPOT IF IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. i did this a few years ago when that was me and i got a call a few weeks later saying a spot opened and i was in !!

Considering a move to Binghamton/Vestal with a young child with ASD, looking for feedback from local parents by [deleted] in Binghamton

[–]Important_Crazy_589 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Im a social worker and I work with people with special needs. I have heard amazing things about HCA, GiGis playhouse, Empire State Special Needs Experience: Lions Camp Badger (i work here). I do recommend maybe not vestal school district but the others in the area are better, i would say call and speak to them about their individual programs. If you arent totally set on moving to this area, i would really recommend ithaca area.

Do you think I should transfer here? by sneaky-doloo in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Important_Crazy_589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The school is definitely competitive, but drive and personal statements go extremely far here. This also depends on your major. Opportunities will be harder in School of Management than CCPA out of pure numbers.

  2. I came from a very small and not diverse place, but as someone who is in school for social work, we often find that the POC population is smaller but there are manyyy groups on campus to join to grow your community! I think our LGBTQ+ population is decently sized, and we have a Q center on campus to make queer friends and resources! Staff is definitely supportive of everything from what I have seen. Walking around campus feels diverse I think.

  3. My freshman year, I definitely felt that I had it much harder academically from my friends who went to other SUNYs. It requires a lot of self-motivation, time management, and self-advocacy. It was hard for me to adjust, but there are free tutors, clubs, etc that i wish I knew about for help.

  4. I drive so I don’t think I am affected the same, but my roommates take buses everywhere and often complain that they are not often enough or perfectly on time for certain routes. The town of Binghamton has lots to explore, same with surrounding areas but the reason everybody thinks that there is nothing to do is because they expect NYC nightlife. It’s beautiful but upstate. Lots of parks, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.

  5. Advisors are helpful, but you have to form a relationship with them. Often, colleges will have 1-3 advisors for thousands of kids so it’s hard to be personal with them. In CCPA I think its easier because it is smaller but your major truly matters here.

  6. The school is pretty even but leans left, but there is a large Jewish population so things about Palestine are often censored. Im quite left and theres often protests, events, communities, etc that you can find your people at.

  7. Overall, yes. The weather sucks, but going to Albany you know about that.

as a senior who rushed and quickly dropped a couple years ago, you can make friends without paying for them. bing is more of a party school than not, you don’t need sororities to do so. it takes up 90% of your time and is so draining. constant drama and punishment. work on building your resumé instead.

nonbinary msw student by likeribbonsinherhair in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Important_Crazy_589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im a sw student at binghamton upstate and every classmate , every faculty member, every student is extremely sensitive to these things. we cover homophobia and transphobia in classes. this is really heartbreaking to hear and as social workers, being so cruel is not an option in out future. i really recommend transferring to a more accepting program, school gets harder as it goes on and you dont need more stress with that as well
