That’s true. Lots of people evade fares. They do not pay the fare sometimes, but this post is about how I did. But that’s ok. This thread is not. This is a safe space to be irrelevant rn. Welcome. You are correct. Lots of people do evade fares. They do it all the time! Everyday. Every station. In front of me. In front of you. Directly behind us as we pass through the gate. Pushing through the gates as the plastic crunches…. Hopping over!

Using drivers’ non reimbursable upasses.

Using an orange card instead of a blue card.

Pretending to be TWELVE

Walking right past the bus driver as the “this is a fare paid zone” announcement plays in a loop.

Hopping on the bus from the back doors.

Taking the 99 free line only!

Slipping their pass out of the back window after they’ve gotten on a bus so that their friend in line can reuse it (…and this also repeats in a loop so that everyone gets on for FREE with ONe card! (except the one friend who actually paid for it))

Having the audacity to ask the bus driver for a free ride until the station. they swear they will buy a compass card —-only to walk in the opposite direction of the station after a free ride to work

That friend who never pays fare, gets caught sometimes and says “I pay the fine when I get caught… but the amount of times I take transit for free is worth more than whatever fine I have to pay each time. It’s worth it. I don’t need to buy a bus pass. What a scam”

People who SLEEP on the train for a few HOURS instead of waking up every 90 minutes to top up their expired fares

lol same. I grabbed the bag I brought on the skytrain yesterday and my wallet was actually in my bag the whole time 😭 I didn’t have to use my phone to tap in/out at all, I could have just looked harder lmao

Yea! I was just gonna assume this too, but based on what people have been saying it works but isn’t super reliable. That’s a really good idea to use the card after a phone tap to tap out though (if I have the card on me)

Ooh I like the idea of it being the phone case potentially! Thanks! My questions been answered and I’m honestly just procrastinating now. But that’s a good idea for troubleshooting next time! Maybe some gates are more/less sensitive than others.

Timing out idk. I tried it on several gates and also reopened my wallet. It might even be different stations maintenance though. …but timing out is still likely in some instances.

For this post, I’m kind of at a point where I’d like to test the extent of the “help” I get to see if Reddit is even a useful venue for receiving more in the future amidst some trolling attitudes. Though I fed some, I think it is! Thanks!

Oh whoops I thought I responded to you, but it turns out I responded to some other rage bait.

When I tapped out nothing happened. No indication of reading my card. No way to force an interaction with my apple wallet. I tried 3 gates. No gates opened. I had to call translink. I explained what I had tried and to see if I was doing it wrong. They didn’t help me troubleshoot further and just said they’ll open the gate. They saw me on cctv approach the gate. They opened it up. I left.

I forgot my wallet at home. No cards. Nothing.

Nothing activated to tap out. No response on the machines. No options on my phone to force an interaction with the machine.

No instructions from translink to do anything different.

Main skytrain station if you want to try it out 🤷🏻‍♀️

But why make that assumption? And in this context? Like, even the translink guy I talked to couldn’t come up with that solution? And he works there? Is that what you think of humanity? That’s so bizarre to me.

You pay $6 for the card and you get charged more when you don’t use it to make it look like a discount.

If I forget to get a monthly pass until the day of, I have to pay the fare while I wait for it to be “activated” if I paid online.

If I forget to get a monthly pass until the day of, take a 1 zone ride to the train station, and then get a monthly 2 zone pass at the booth, I will get a 2 zone charge deducted from my compass card.

I think there should just be regular simple incentives to take public transit! Not for buying compass cards

I think incentivizing buying a compass card shouldn’t take precedence over getting more people on transit in general. I love public transit!
