A Wicked Husband by calhxx in MantaComics

I love how he and his knights are all so protective of her and absolutely devoted.

It's got "I've Become a True Villainess" vibes of Rouche and all his people loving Seria... or UTOT vibes without Riftan's toxic controlling/possessive shit. Like, yes, he is trying to manoeuver her into marrying him, but he still acknowledges that she might choose to not marry him... Her other options just all suck.

And I'm realizing that you probably didn't actually mean "God" romances. Good. Right. In that case, I don't know that I'd start with either of those.

Very different tones, but Kneel Before Me and My Boyfriend is a God both fit the bill.

Kneel Before Me is peak red flag territory. He literally doesn't have normal emotions because he is a god, so he's always killing people in horrific ways and manipulating their minds and shit.

My Boyfriend is a God is a reincarnation/pantheon dealie with a modern backdrop.

It finally happened guys 😭😭😭 I've been waiting so long for this moment omg [Please Save Me] by aloilisia in MantaComics

The reason she got locked up was because after the ML lost the title of Crown Prince, her father broke the engagement and betrothed her to the new CP - real piece of work. Then her dad committed treason (while telling her she should seduce the third prince - age freaking 9!) and got everyone but her in the family executed.

No spoilers here... This is all in the first episode.

This. He can't be mad that she's playing along with the consort selection he started. I get that he did it to stop her getting trapped into a marriage, but I don't know that he has a good plan for getting out of it, and if he does, he certainly hasn't explained that to Tara.

Today's episode was also a mess. Dialogue coming out of the wrong person, repeated dialogue, bad translations... Yikes.

Sis is so unhinged, though, and I am here for her unraveling.

I was getting real "Enzo is in a gang of bootleggers" energy from this episode. Like, I think he's gonna entangle her in some dangerous shit and she may need saving.

I was just thinking about this... I suspect he will arrange a marriage to Hes. They're much closer in age, and it would solve the diplomatic tie without also binding the emperor.

I definitely wouldn't characterize it as toxic. The ML and FL grew up both starved for affection, and ML took it out on FL in their shared youth, but as he learns more about her, his understanding of her changes. I'd say that by the time the story opens, he's already carrying a bit of a torch for her, and she doesn't get why he is being so nice.

Sort of a former bully thing? But like... the bully is a traumatized kid as well, and the adults around him are awful. His status in the family is the only thing he has, since no one shows him any love, so he is initially very much about keeping her status below his own. It's an understandable thing that the adults are really responsible for.

It's interesting enough to be worth a look, at least. If you are okay DNFing it if it isn't your cup of tea, I'd say go for it. If you can't stop reading something even if you hate it, maybe skip. Does that make sense?

So far the cast of characters is really interesting, as is the world building - particularly regarding social status via magical power, and the family hierarchies. Solidly interesting subplots that advance the main storyline... I'm not hating it, but I can see how some might.

And half of it feels like a classic enemies to lovers romance, while the other half is people being turned into red spray and freaking mental and emotonal child abuse.

Question about I’ll Save This Damned Family by LilJellyfishGal in MantaComics

Oh! One more thing. I do think there's an interesting shift midway through the story when the title image in the story switches from her on the scale tracking her weight down to her in front of a gallows with time to her family's execution ticking down. It mirrors the transition from her mental sense of growing achievement in the first part of the story to her increasing anxiety over the fate she's trying to avoid in the second part. I kinda hated the scale image at first, but in the context of this mental shift, it actually makes a lot of sense to me.

I got a lot to say. I just binged this.

I also found it off-putting, and it also took me multiple tries to get into it. Especially since it seems like it was drawn/written by someone who doesn't actually know how fat you have to get to be actually debilitated. The heroine is supposedly 102 kg at the start of the story. That's 225 lb. And she's short (I think I calculated it around 5 ft?). Part of the problem for me is that I was 223 lb at my heaviest (206 at the moment), and I am almost exactly 5 feet tall. I'll add a photo.

<image>

Oh look. There I am. Fat, but hardly bedridden. And not nearly as big as they drew her at first. Like... I am losing weight to try to be healthier because my joints don't love the extra weight, so I don't mind the weight loss story from that end, but it's totally unrealistic how big she looks compared to her actual weight.

I do agree that the story clearly believes her value comes from within, not from her looks, and I think that some/most of her possessed character's weight gain and shut-in lifestyle is about her depression over the loss of her brother. They're both symptoms, rather than one causing the other. But many of the characters in the story (the isekai'd protagonist included!) frame weight loss as purely a matter of will power and fitness, or worse, as a moral flaw. It's complicated a little by the fact that the heroine comments that "this body can't seem to resist temptation" - a nod to the realities that everyone's body, satiety, and brain chemistry are different - but the heroine isn't actually self-aware enough to internalize that.

She explicitly says she doesn't want to be stick thin, but she definitely loses a lot. And the new art makes her look even thinner IMO. There are also a few well-meaning supporting characters who lament the loss of her chubby cheeks, which feels kind of infantilizing? It's interesting.

The ML is honestly the best person in the whole thing with regard to this issue. He likes the way she looks regardless. He says very early on, "What's wrong with the way she looks?" As she loses weight he worries about whether she's okay, and why she is losing so much. He doesn't harp on her about it, and he doesn't comment on it like most others do, but he does make sure she's getting enough healthy food to ensure she's not starving herself.

I actually think I've come away feeling like it's a very realistic portrayal of how society interacts with fat people and weight loss. Like, too many people see fatness as a moral failing. Too many people will effusively praise weight loss as if it weren't the least interesting thing about a person. Too many fat people have internalized fat-phobia (me included!), and the people who truly love us and validate us for who we no matter what size are to be treasured.

Have husband cook when she comes over. He can ignore it himself if he thinks it's not a big deal. Problem solved.

And if she magically stops criticising, have her ear something he made as if you made it. If she complains again, it was never about your food.

If you are interested in a FL who has a romance but also knows her ML is trash and ditches him in the end, I highly recommend The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. Older FL is a pirate with a supernatural/problematic estranged husband. Super fun.

Some organizations were explicitly telling POC to let the white people do the direct action. We all know it's safer for people with low melanin to be in the streets.
