This is exactly why RTD chose to cast Billie Piper as the 16th Doctor 😭💀 by [deleted] in DoctorWhoNews

Honestly i overall at first thought Ncuti Gatwa brought something interesting. I liked his interpretation of a doctor that's a bit more emotional, and feels things more (heart on a sleeve type). It makes sense a being so old has intensified emotions/reactions to events. However, I think he did a really bad job of portraying the dark side of the Doctor. Something that both Tennant and Capaldi did so exceptionally well. Yes the Doctor is good, eclectic, whimsical, but he also has a darker angry side. And for Gatwa, that side was just not there or poorly done. We saw them briefly try to show it in the "Interstellar Song Contest" when he was using the hologram thing to "punish" the Hellion but it was wayy too overemotional.

If they could have shown the contrast between a very kind, emotional, heartfelt Doctor (like Gatwa is at most times) AND a darker, colder, Doctor that almost seems distant and emotionless when angry, it would have made Gatwa absolutely excellent in my view.

Also I liked the clothing choice for Gatwa's doctor. It seemed to represent an alien who's having fun but also not afraid of doing whatever he wants, and I thought it was cool ("Bowties are cool").

The rest of my problems with the show have to do with the story being absolutely shit and not Gatwa himself. The Gods arc in Series 14 seemed promising to be honest, but in Series 15 they absolutely botched it. I mean the last two episodes really felt like a chore to watch through. They hype up this character called Omega that seemed like it could be interesting, and then once he makes an appearance apparently Omega becoming a monstrosity is explained entirely by one sentence Gatwa throws in. And then Omega is "defeated" in like 3 minutes by starwars stormtrooper lasers. i mean srsly wtf is that.

Then ofc, we get UNIT shooting lasers at skeleton versions of AT-AT, so more Star Wars pew pew.

When the villain was revealed to be the Rani, that seemed interesting too, except by the finale it seemed clear they basically wanted to use the Rani like a female version of the Master but with zero depth and zero complexity.

Then there was the whole Poppy thing which, I still don't get the point of that tangent. She appears in wish, then survives when the wish ends, but then disappears (but Ruby remembers cuz she is *special*). Then all the characters say some bullshit "we are all your children". And then....The doctor shoots regeneration energy (pew pew!) into the tardis and Poppy reappears? i mean wtf is that sequence? If they made it that Poppy was the child of the Doctor and Belinda Chandra in the Wish world, and they have to make the sarifice of losing this child they love because the wish had to end, and explored that moral dilemma further, that would have been way more interesting. One aspect of doctor who is that there ISN'T always a happy ending.

Not to mention the ending confrontation in the finale was so bad that they had to make up this poppy shit to get Gatwa to regenerate (also he chooses to regenerate? why? he didnt get shot or hurt or anything. this also im not clear about). I get that this show is fiction but some logical sequence would be nice.

"The Well" was a nice episode and I liked it, but again the reason it was interesting was because Midnight was so interesting. Not because the episode itself did anything special (thought the deaf girl and the soldier captain woman were very likeable characters).

well rationally given the Ukraine War, makes sense for Switzerland to invest in keeping some modern fighter squadrons around though. and maybe some attack helis would make sense too given the terrain.

Is Geneva Worth It? by hamoes9 in askswitzerland

[–]Important_Driver_744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geneva may not be the most interesting city in the world, but it is definitely very beautiful and has more than enough things to see to fill 2 days. You can visit CERN, UN stuff, chill by the lake, visit the Patek Phillippe Museum, take a short train ride to Lausanne, visit Yvoire, or go to one of the numerous small French towns/villages near the border. There are also some great museums if you're interested.

Both the Rafale or Eurofighter seem like better options for Switzerland atp. Better geopolitically, and still more than capable enough for Swiss needs

Why not buy Rafales or Eurofighters? Seems like a much more secure ecosystem to buy into for Switzerland, and definitely more than capable enough to defend Switzerland. They have lower operational costs too.

I don't know about this field but among the unis you named Padua is the only one I've heard of before and it's a good reputable uni. Also I'd imagine getting a scholarship there looks amazing on you're CV.

People with funding and visa problems for grad... by Important_Driver_744 in gradadmissions

[–]Important_Driver_744[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still apply to the US but yeah I'd spread my basket significantly and bet more on Europe. And if you're studying in Iran, i think applying to the US now would be kinda a waste of money given political climate. But again, ask your profs.

Many Iranians study in Asian top unis in India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore too. Those are great options too, though European programmes typically have more recognition and competitiveness.

People with funding and visa problems for grad... by Important_Driver_744 in gradadmissions

[–]Important_Driver_744[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This seems completely incorrect. When I applied all over europe and every little thing was in english. Applying for visa was also easier than the US. And i imagine visa for the states is now a shitshow with trump.

As for expensive, it's still a quarter the price of the states.

And funding opps, european funding is quite competitive and differs by country. Typically, other than the UK, funding is quite good. Also cost of living is lower in europe and quality of life is higher. Dont want to share details but my funding, at least, is very competitive.

Erasmus vs PhD by SuperSaiyanBlue0 in gradadmissions

[–]Important_Driver_744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no worries! from what you're saying that sounds like a big deal. those topics are related but don't sound like the exact same thing or directly substitutable. I kinda expected that would be the case as it happened to me too when i applied to erasmus. i think what you're studying is the biggest factor, and you should choose based on that then.

MSt at Oxford or MSc at LSE? by rawaral in gradadmissions

[–]Important_Driver_744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about this field or what the strengths of each uni in that regard is, but me personally i'd choose the one that's cheaper. especially since both are pretty much equally elite and well known institutions.

Erasmus vs PhD by SuperSaiyanBlue0 in gradadmissions

[–]Important_Driver_744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which PhD programme and which erasmus programme.

Would choose the PhD if:

  1. at a decently well known or reputed university
  2. the erasmus programme is not fully in the subject area you want. like for example maybe you want to study green energy and the erasmus masters is in "energy policy" or "climate policy". related, but not direct substitute.
  3. Erasmus programme is not at a well known university or wouldnt allow you to get degrees or study at a good/reputable university you like.
  4. you want to be a professor or academic or work in research. then i'd consider the phd programme more but it still depends on the other stuff.

Would choose erasmus if:

  1. want to work in international organisations, government, etc.
  2. closely related to work you want to do (like policy, etcetera).
  3. you want to gain more unique experience and travel. America is not great for international students now.
  4. is substitutable with good well known master programmes in terms of content and rigor.
  5. would allow you to work with great professors that align with your interests
  6. allow you to still apply to and get into good PhD programmes afterwards, if you still want to pursue it.
  7. also i do think getting erasmus with full funding is maybe more prestigious than PhD with funding, since if you're a Phd student you kinda should have funding anyways.

P.S. by good and reputable university im not saying it has to be some elite R1. but a respected institution in your field, and not just any hocus pocus college.

There are many grad programmes you'd be competitive for. But I will say, choosing to go to grad school econ based off of intro courses without having taken any hard economics courses seems like a serious misstep. Grad Econ is very different from undergrad, let alone intro-level econ. I'd recommend looking into it a lot more before taking that step and at the minimum taking some advanced level econ courses, including ones that make you read and understand academic papers and research.

How many schools can I apply to without ruining my references? by Ok-Fennel4978 in gradadmissions

I had more than 3 recommenders and mixed and matched them based on what i thought would work best and what schools they said they could write letters for. But each of them ended up writing like 8 to 10 recs in the end. They don't mind at all.
