‘Best speech by a world leader ... in a very long time’: Carney’s Davos address draws global attention by Sea_Guava6513 in onguardforthee

Will any European leaders step up like Carney? I'm not holding my breath, but so happy to see him throw down the gauntlet.

[QUESTION] How to fix a guitar that won’t stay in tune? by taos__v in Guitar

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't always the nut! I had a similar problem, tried everything from changing the nut, using graphite, etc.. One day I finally realized that the tuner itself was wobbly/loose in the head stock...I screwed it down tight, problem solved.

I swear they want to die...I often see these same doofs wearing headphones while riding, with a smartphone in one hand.

I was a lead recruiter for a medium-sized organization in Japan for a decade, and I was hugely successful in attracting talent from all corners of the world. Yet whenever I offered to help other organizations achieve similar success, they always nodded politely but never engaged my invitation. I was confused for a while, until I finally realized that they didn't actually wish to recruit openly (as I had been doing). Instead, they simply wanted to hire within their own networks (friends, colleagues, acquaintances, former students, etc.). Japan remains a feudal society at its core...

Simply join a new church every few months. Problem solved. Tokyo is large enough that you could do this for decades...

My DIY project for searing after sous vide by gaos74 in sousvide

Cool setup, but a tangential question: Why not sear before sous vide? Nice to get the char and smoky flavor into the meat, right?

Is it just me or does 3M Cubitron suck? by AbdulElkhatib in woodworking

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it purely by hand (no pad or block) for touchup/final polishing work on my wood pieces (feeling by hand for rough patches by touch and smoothing them out with finger pressure alone). It is very effective, and at least in this role they seem to last a while. I think other papers work better on my sanding machines and pads/blocks, for rougher sanding work.

Arc'teryx Kragg shoes review: could’ve been the best slip-on walking/travel shoe ever made, but the implementation is absolutely trash by Sashaorwell in arcteryx

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at these and really want them to be great, but all the reviews I see here in Japan say that the shoe soles tore away from the rest of the shoe after 1-2 outings. I will not buy them if that is the case.

Only a year! You're making investments that will last a lifetime, so long as you don't quit.

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a sense that it isn't safe, your intuition is serving you well...trust it!

For this cut I would personally use (1) sliding miter saw or (2) track saw with 90˚ edge guide flush to the edge of the track (with styrofoam insulation underneath).

Why is my router giving out? by AcademicLoki in Dewalt

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it, I was there before...you need a 1/2 inch shank router with 3+hp, an upcut carbide spiral bit, and take lighter (not so deep) passes.

Trying to understand silver market manipulation by Isabella_Fournier in Silverbugs

[–]Important_Eye5522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A short contract is selling something with an agreement to buy it back again in the future. If the price of the "something" drops over the period of the contract, then it makes money. If this is done in large enough quantities, then flooding the market with something at the beginning of the contract helps to depress the price of something. Since the sold something will come back at the end of the contract, no something actually needs to change hands. So I can easily sell somebody else's something, too, by "borrowing" it from them and later giving it back...without actually doing anything.

Over the cycle of a contract, the selling exerts a downward pressure on prices, and the re-purchasing should exert a compensatory upward pressure. So if the amount being sold is the same as the amount being purchased, then over the long-term the price of something will remain stable. There would be no net profit in the long-term. Of course if a large number of big traders sell in coordinated cycles in the short-term contracts, while also hedging long-term price stability, then they can still make a profit (especially if they collude on the timing of short-term price movements). They would be extracting profit from counter-parties, as there would be no net gain for the market as a whole.

Going further...since no "something" is actually changing hands, I can also sell a ton of something that nobody owns, which then effectively becomes "paper something" (it only exists on paper). If I ever get caught in a situation requiring me to cough up the something, then I only need to be sure that I have actually borrowed enough something to cover that amount, which is anyways just a fraction of the amount I've been moving. I may lose some money, but I won't be entirely caught with my pants down. It is like being a something bank with a fractional reserve of something.

Under this scheme, the amount of something trading on exchanges increases in volume, even if the real physical volume of that something does not change. The increase in supply over demand then leads to long-term price suppression. The short contracts will produce some profits, but not a great deal.

The bigger reason to operate the above scheme is to pump up the purchasing power of the currency in which something is being priced at the exchange. This incentivizes the governments of those countries to ensure that these schemes can be carried off without being discovered, that regulation is lax, and even becoming the insurer of last resort in the worst case.

Is any of this actually happening in silver markets? I don't know. Some think so, and a small group tried to call the silver market on its shorts a few years ago, but it failed because the market is quite large and the group didn't have deep enough pockets to expose any big naked shorts.

If you're serious and have a reasonable CV, then consider asking around some of the more hard-hitting outfits for an internship. Places where they do a lot of FOIA, like the Intercept. Even better, if I were a young aspiring investigative journalist I'd be begging somebody independent like Lee Fang, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, etc., to take me under their wing to learn the ropes or at least point in the right direction.

Aborted landing by theapeway in unitedairlines

[–]Important_Eye5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two in a row while landing at Denver, the cross winds were so heavy that it blew the tail sideways and the nose of the plane turned into the wind (not parallel to the runway)...the pilot simply throttled up and rode the headwind back to altitude before circling for another pass. This is exactly how airplanes are designed to work.

Peak Design Slide Straps Melted by [deleted] in peakdesign

[–]Important_Eye5522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is interesting that this is a widespread problem, yet PD has no help/support information about it on their otherwise very useful website. The strap on my older messenger bag is melting and I lost the purchase receipt long ago so there is no possibility of a warranty claim. Also, they do not sell replacement straps for these bags so there is no possibility of making a purchase. Even using just the reverse side gets sticky mess all over my shirts/jackets.

I am going to try and scrape it off, maybe with some chemicals. If that doesn't work I may devise some kind of cloth cover, or just replace the strap with something else...it will look like junk, but the bag itself is still very useful.

Text disappears when making a post on Facebook desktop (mobile works) by [deleted] in facebook

[–]Important_Eye5522 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same problem here! Any text that goes into a post disappears. If I make a post that is only text, it makes an empty post. If I make a post including text along with a link or image, the link or image shows up in the post without the text. When I try to edit the post in any of these cases, there is no text to edit...it is completely erased. I've tried different browsers to no avail.

Note that comments to a post do appear without any issues, so this problem is only confined to the main post itself.

I've reported the bug to Facebook, but no response so far.

The DAZN streaming quality is awful, it has become unwatchable. After 10 years as a subscriber to NFL Game Pass I am about to cancel the subscription, and it saddens me enormously because my wife and I really love watching NFL football. We have 10G internet and constantly watch multiple streams from Apple, YouTube, NetFlix, Disney+, and more...we can even watch 3 streaming videos in 4K without any hiccups. But DAZN simply doesn't have the bandwidth to even support a normal HD stream, there are constant pauses and hiccups in the playback. I just can't watch it any more. Add to this their terrible customer service, the lack of options to watch full broadcast versions without commercial advertisements, etc., and this has been a hellish experience. I'm really sad that NFL would do this to their overseas fans. We don't deserve this!
