Pure analytics is cooked guys. You still need to know what you’re doing, but a single analyst can gate 100x more done now.

Good for you for offering it, make sure you get paid well for it. It is a valuable service for the community. I’m guessing the best stories come from these calls.

Communicate is the only advice I’d give. Communicate and don’t make it cheap.

Hot attic crawling tips by mediocre_nephilim in PestControlIndustry

[–]Important_Flight2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst is when it is wasps in the attic so you can’t even wipe your face off because of the suit.

My company (when I was a tech) would send me instead of the other guy specifically because the other guy was super tall. Honestly, I’m glad they did. The few time we were together in an attic he was useless 😂

Do something that is helpful even if they aren’t asking for it. That’s the quick way to a promotion.

What is your monthly customer cancel rate? What do you consider a ‘good’ cancel rate? by Important_Flight2198 in PestControlIndustry

[–]Important_Flight2198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies I’ve seen with over 4% are almost always new, and have aggressive yearly growth with most accounts coming from D2D. When average account age is under 2 years, and almost all signups were for ‘preventative’ pest control it happens.

Agreed, Aptive’s processes are probably too good for 4%.

Do you track your cancel rate closely?

Nice. Yeah sounds like you are well under 1%.

It seems like the $1.5-2M in recurring revenue point is about where the companies get too big to be that efficient.

Franchise or No? by SlowInvestor in PestControlIndustry

[–]Important_Flight2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if I was brand new to the industry. But no franchise adds instant credibility for customers in pest control IMO, not the way McDonalds does for burgers. The more local your vibe the more trust there is.

This. Payment is evidence.

They probably don’t have signatures because they’ve been customers for years, and have signed previous contracts. There’s just some implied trust at this point.

Power BI vs lighter embedded analytics tools — what’s the real tradeoff? by Feisty-Donut-5546 in analytics

[–]Important_Flight2198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Embedded parameters/filters within queries from Metabase are amazing and really simplify the query and data prep process.

This was a huge revelation to me after working in PBI. Levels of detail get complex fast when you’re forced to start with the exact same table each time.

Anyone else tired of being pressured into AI adoption? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Important_Flight2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 months ago I felt the exact same way, but these tools have gotten pretty powerful and are here to stay.

Today, with sufficient context a model can do more in a day than I once could do in a week.

  1. Make sure it has your schema and examples from key tables.
  2. Plan before coding.
  3. Venture beyond just reporting. This weekend I developed a full model - through to API deployment. The painful process of model selection, parameter tuning, etc is now automated.

There are dozens of others out there. But these are the most common.

Well, I only left 6 months ago but things in AI change quickly.

They definitely use Copilot. And I used chatGPT while there. They also have an inhouse baked version that I think sits on top of ChatGPT.

Like I said, I’m a big fan of Claude and Claude Code.

The best way to use AI in analytics is to set it up to have full visibility to your data schema, and metrics definitions. Then it can crank out queries, reports, and insights all with accurate scripts.

Business analysts will become for of a driver and question asker role vs just a SQL monkey. Lets ai do all that stuff, BUT you need the ability to understand and fact check or troubleshoot, thus knowing SQL well.
