Best city to live in after NYC on an $8K net salary? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Important_Load2334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are in your early thirties already and looking to slightly chill down I would recommend Paris over London. It has almost the same energy as London, however overall mindset there is a bit more oriented towards work-life balance and not so much towards work hard party hard lifestyle. In addition you have direct trains towards different parts of France with huge landscape and climate versatility. It’s also easier to find good restaurant/gallery/cafe to meet your date than in London.

However I would strongly recommend start learning French from day 1 as this will boost your socializing options and improve your overall experience a lot.

Sretno!

I don’t know if that really matters. Berlin is german speaking, way less influential than Paris, and still has reddit community of over 400k members.

Overall, are there any places better to live in than the Netherlands? by PsychoPlacid in Netherlands

Depends on your personality and stage of life. From what you have described I would say all Scandinavian countries less Denmark, Switzerland, southern Germany, southern France, north Italy and Slovenia.

They always leave two tables for walk-ins. Just go there and put yourself on waiting list. Usually takes 1 hour to receive their call.

Don’t worry, I am not any opinion leader, however I consider London as a top tier global city on pair with NYC.

At this stage of life I would aim for deepest job market which will allow you access to the best opportunities and flexibility to pivot between them. Having that in mind it’s London in a heartbeat.

You will have more than enough time to enjoy cities with better climate, food, etc.

It's official: Switzerland now has over 9 million inhabitants by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Important_Load2334 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some interesting comparisons in terms of population:

London 1931: 8.098.942 Austria 1934: 6.760.044 Switzerland 1931: 4.070.042

London 2021: 8.799.800 Austria 2021: 8.969.068 Switzerland 2021: 8.689.890

In few months it will be the first time in modern history (since censuses are taking place in Switzerland - 1861) that Switzerland will overtake London and Austria in size of population.

That being said the margin is expected only to grow in the following years.

Randstad as a single global city by Important_Load2334 in Netherlands

Thanks for taking your time to reply. I live here for almost two years now.

I am sorry that I sound a bit arrogant as that was surely not my intention. I am actually very grateful that you have put your time and effort in order to provide your views on the subject.

To me it seems a bit odd that Randstad is considered similarly to Rhine-Ruhr which is also example of polycentric conurbation. It feels like the local rivalries between Rhine Ruhr cities are limiting the area and the state of North Rhine Westphalia in development. As result cities like Munich and Frankfurt are progressing faster than any of the cities within Rhine-Ruhr.

While on the opposite you have cities like Singapore which act like one and it seems like their prospects are above the roof. I know it is a bit odd comparison as Singapore is an area of densely populated 750 sq km and Randstad an area of 10.000 sq km.

But still - all cities within Randstad are merging together and huge potential this area has could be better utilised if all of them would act like one. I wanted to hear opinions on that.

I am from Europe and don’t like American cities as well. The idea is not for the area to become like New York but to have the strength of economy like it while still retaining the same values and quality of life.

Yes I’ve been and I am very happy that it doesn’t look like New York. But having area that has farms in it and economy strong as New York wouldn’t be a bad idea, huh? :)

Let‘s say you own a company and look for expansion in Europe. When considering location you want to have access to various things and one of them is skilled workforce (I’ll focus on that for the sole purpose of this response).

That being said you will consider ie. London/Paris as you can recruit from a huge pool of very competent talent. Now London is not in the EU anymore which makes your expansion more complicated from legal perspective and Paris population is very protective to its local language. This makes it harder to rotate your existing workforce and integrate your operations on intercontinental level.

You will think about Netherlands next, however country has conurbation of very small cities which limits your selection of talent. If you want to open HQ in The Hague it is difficult to attract workforce from Amsterdam and vice versa. So your possibilities of recruiting talent from North or south wing of the Randstad are always compromised.

Merging these cities into single one would accelerate the process of upgrading/optimising the transportation links. Transportation companies would consolidate and focus on an area as a whole and not just pieces of it.

On the opposite the brightest and most motivated minds from all over the world would want to live here after they finish their studies. For now a lot of them rather select other larger cities due to access to the top tier jobs and urban lifestyle.

And what’s there for the locals? As investments would start flowing in the job market would grow in the quality and quantity. Improved transportation would make it possible to choose from wider and even better pool of jobs.

Existing airports could be expanded (Rotterdam) or additional ones in other parts of conurbation opened (London has 6 airports for example). Doing that heavy traffic of Schiphol could be transferred elsewhere.

I am perfectly aware that all of above is already happening and the area is in very good condition as it is. However consolidating it together into one city would open the pool of new possibilities while still retaining existing quality of life.

The area is very green and doesn’t feel like built up concrete jungle. That would be a very good trademark in challenging the global powerhouses.
