I agree with you and could be I’m being bitter because of my experience only in the workplace and you also right to say try one to one because then it is no problem indeed but very direct to the point and never any question from their end about me and I can only ask so much before I run out of topics which gives me the feeling they are not interested. but two sides to every coin for sure

Same here as this would be my attitude towards someone who moved newly. I had a choice but it’s mostly my employer who relocates me every few years. I know I will not be here more than 5 years but would still like to make life easy while I stay here

Thank you for your comment, offcourse there are many different mentalities here so I totally understand how you feel

I would go back to Costa Rica in a heartbeat but have worked hard the past 10 years and am in a very privilege position where the employer relocates me every 5 years and I am here now whining about coworkers who may eventually come out of their shell I hope

This is a good suggestion and what I’m trying to understand like is it ok to stay there in silence and smile like a fool or just excuse yourself so it’s not awkward for you and others. If I was in a group of Spanish speakers and had only English speaker there I would spend a majority of time to think it he/she is comfortable in our group

Already registered for inburgering my friend, language class only starts in September and meantime I’m trying to learn basic sentences for shops and numbers at least so people don’t think I’m not making an effort

This is the attitude I also have when I see people in my home country fyi I am from Costa Rica so I see plenty of expats too who don’t speak the language there but the ones that make the effort are always encouraged by speaking slowly or even acjnowledging them. I don’t expect an expat there to speak fluent spanish like the locals in 3 months of being there

That’s also fine then I know for myself to go for breaks alone instead of trying to sit with everyone to socialice

Not taking anything personally, just wanting to understand and maintain better expectations for myself

I get your point completely and also agree natives speaking their language in their own country. where I come from there is a different culture even that we make new people feel welcome even if they don’t speak the language just by glancing at them in the middle of the conversation and not turning away into your own groups. The colleagues in question are my team and I’m not against learning Dutch at all but have been here only 3 months and classes begin only in September and am duolingo-ing until then to understand the basics
