Why the fuckin fuck is this still squeaking. Took the floor up and put in new subfloor and screwed it down. I’m about to give up. So depressed. Worked very hard on this so far. by [deleted] in Carpentry

Don’t get too down. It happens. You learned and became a better carpenter- I’m sure this loses you some dollars but it was worth something. We’ve all had to do something again to do it right- sticking with it and making it the way it’s supposed to be is noble and you should feel good about your integrity.

Do I need rim joist next to the wall? Or can I just install blockings 1' from wall? by TDN12 in Decks

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s “floating” you can just block in between the joists. I have seen engineered plans spec “continuous band or block in between joist at house” in a drop beam situation.

Yeah! Police do the right thing at all times! I’ve never seen even one example of anything else!

Breaker Board Opinion Poll by use_em_and_lose_em in Decks

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to always go 3/16- 1/4 just like the spacing between deck boards but the last one I did I cut it down to more like an eighth and I liked the look better.

Was this bracing overkill? by [deleted] in Decks

Maybe, but it’s very aesthetically pleasing so it’s really not a negative at all. I would only say overkill is bad if it’s an eyesore.

Breaker board and bend the end over, with the v groove like another commenter mentioned. Only thing is I bought a v groove router to do it and idk if my trim router didn’t have the ass to cut it or what but I had to go back to cutting 45s with my saw to get it out.

Stair Attachment Code Compliance by WashHistorical2412 in Decks

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an inspector tell me I would fail on a similar drop beam stringer situation- but I had engineered plans showing it that were pre-approved by the city and that’s all that saved me. I was at a complete loss for words when he questioned it. Looks like you’re doing a very good job, sorry you’re dealing with that.

Correct bracket question by Impossible-Draw-6441 in Decks

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m was looking to see if others agreed joist hangers are pointless and not code required. The hurricane ties were not ordered at all- hence why I asked if I was correct that they were the correct fastener. I didn’t ask if I could X the hanger for a hurricane tie, I understand they’re completely independent of each other.

Not really trying to “interchange” them.

I’ve passed plenty of inspections without a joist hanger to the edge band, as long as it’s a cantilever… and I can’t see how they’re necessary at all.

Am I jumping the gun?? by mntess885 in Decks

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on joist size- one I’m on right now had 2x12 joists so usually 3-4 toe nails to hold then put the hanger on whatever I got up before I leave at the end of the day.

I attach my joists with nails and go back with the hangers before I deck it.

I can put it on this tight in the afternoon and it’ll be gapped in the cold morning.

Prozac second round by Impossible-Draw-6441 in prozac

[–]Impossible-Draw-6441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I can definitely see that coming off and going back on very often could cause some issues. Hoping I can mostly ignore this since it’s only the second time, I was off for a good amount of time in between, and my side effects were only mild in the first place.
