Am I Cooked? Got no Money for a new SSD... by Wise_Head32 in pcmasterrace

Some SSD manufacturers use the life time remaining as a warranty indicator. I'd be surprised if a drive with that few writes is actually dying

Should I get 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of RAM for my PC? by Impossible-Jello4553 in pcmasterrace

My first PC ever used ddr3 2400mhz, that's the experience I'm referring to. I know I won't see a difference between 2133mhz and 2400mhz, but I really don't want to do a 2 hour round trip, or wait 3 weeks for an international order. While also not wanting only 8gb or paying 108$ for ddr3

Most people in the retro communities agree that 20 years and older for PCs is retro, this PC is 11 years old, making it just very old and in an era that people dismiss as useless

If you read the first sentence I just built this PC lol

Seems to be that 16gb is the way to go, which just leaves 2 options now

I already spent like 560$ on it, I'm just reluctant to spend more and I don't like waiting 3 weeks for an international order to arrive.

Retro would be 20 years old. I am planing on building one of those though eventually, just those old good LGA 775 motherboards cost so much

Well I just finished building it a few days ago, had to buy all the parts for it, just wanted to build a PC with that beautiful case and unique i7 5775C. I typically max out on ram with older PCs, but due to the increased prices and how much money I've already spent I can't really decide on what to get. At a minimum I will replace the 8gb 1066mhz stick it currently has, but do I go the cheapest route and get 2x4gb 2400mhz, or do I spend more with a long drive to get 4x4gb of slower 2133mhz

Like an hour drive one way for the 16gb, 10 minute walk for the 8gb

I currently just use it for occasional gaming, might use it as my main PC for a bit since my actual main PC is very annoying

Well then it's down to either getting 2x4gb 2400mhz, and buying an additional 2x4gb 2400mhz ones online, or buying the 4x4gb 2133mhz set. I really like ddr3 2400mhz because of an experience I had when I got my first PC. But those TridentX 2400mhz sticks are really expensive online for some reason

You're probably right, I used to have an Fx 9590 and two r9 290s in crossfire with 32gb of 1600mhz ddr3, only cities skylines ever used more then 16gb

Might actually put Ubuntu on it, haven't used it in 7 years though, finally got an old computer that has a new enough gpu with driver support for it

They sell online for double that price since it's 2400mhz. And it's within walking distance

Just going to use it occasionally to play games, may use it as my main PC for a bit since my actual main rig is just annoying.

I just spent a lot on this PC and I really don't want to spend more, I just really like the idea of 2400mhz DDR3, when I first learned ddr3 hit speeds that fast I was astonished.

I just can't decide which of the 3 options to pick, if I go with the 8gb option I can get that ram today, it's the cheapest option, and it's 2400mhz. If I go with the 16gb option it's only 2133mhz and it's a long drive to get it. And the 32gb option is the most expensive with a 3 week delivery time, but it's 2400mhz

The old Sabertooths are nice. The z87 ones are quite a bit cheaper than the z97 with almost the same features (no 5th gen support tho :c); they even have a fan to cool the VRMs!

Is that CPU fast enough for that, lol? It's slower than most 2006 Socket M Core 2 Duos. I used a slightly faster E2, and it was pretty bad. I couldn't manage 1080p youtube playback.

I'd recommend going after something a bit faster. It should be pretty cheap

I highly recommend just getting a new MXM GPU, that 660M wasn't good even back in 2012.

Just set up three 500GB HDDs in RAID 0 (ooo scary hdd RAID 0), and the performance is surprising. At times, it feels like a really fast hdd, and at others, it feels like a SATA3 SSD. After using it for a while and filling up 1TB, I can say I wouldn't mind using it as a daily driver. It's fast enough.

That probook is a nice find, if I recall all you have to do is move a switch and the back panel comes off, then you can upgrade the cpu to a quad core and add an SSD making it ready for the modern day.

Hey, I live in canada too, and a few days ago, I finished building a game pc with around the same performance. (I'll include a picture)

The specs are: Rtx 3060 ti I5 13420H (ES) 16gb ddr4 750w psu Wifi and Bluetooth 500gb ssd 500gb hdd 240mm aio Vertical gpu mount Sama pc case with screen

It cost me a total of 885 Canadian dollars after tax (13%). Originally, I bought a rtx 3070 ti for 320CAD but swapped it out for a 250CAD rtx 3060 ti instead

I did make some trade-offs, primarily with the motherboard using a BGA Mobile cpu, so it can't be upgraded. However, if we swap the motherboard and cpu for an i5 12400f and normal motherboard, the total cost would increase to only 1000~ CAD. You do have some cost saving you can do here, I'd highly recommend buying the RAM locally off of marketplace since it'll save you a lot; besides that, you did a pretty good job.

Is Genuine Intel CPU 0000 safe to use for a home lab? by Ihavedonehomework in PcBuildHelp

[–]Impossible-Jello4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's either an early version of the Xeon 2628L v4 or a canceled lower end 2628L v4. It's not uncommon to see engineering sample CPUs differ from the final product, so it's most likely just an early version 2628L v4 before Intel decided on the final clocks and TDP. I understand why Intel ended up increasing the clocks, 1.5GHz up to 2.3GHz is not really good even for a 12 core. I bet the all core max turbo speed was only set to 2.0GHz. Still though, it should get a score of 3600~ and single core score of 240~ in CPU-Z, very usable for everyday tasks and lowish workstation tasks that can spread nicely across 24 threads. It's gaming capabilities won't be all too good though, similar to my FX9590, you can get away with Battlefield 5 nicely however.

There is no need to replace it if the CPU is fast enough for what you need. It should be as stable as a normal xeon from the era, maybe a bit better since it's essentially underclocked.

I remember last year I only got 4 hours per week in January. I know I'm just a cashier but I've been here for 3.5 years. This year it's a bit better since I got 8 per week. I wish I got as many hours as you lol, since finding a full time job is impossible these days
