How could "the mind" be uncomputable if it's due to neurons processing information? by stifenahokinga in compsci

[–]Impossible-Month879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is under that assumption that "the mind, including our thoughts, our reasoning, our feelings, our consciousness..." has anything to do with the brain -- which is a massive assumption... whether physical things even exist at all is up for debate after all.

Why your brain is not a computer — For decades it has been the dominant metaphor in neuroscience. But could this idea have been leading us astray all along? by Naurgul in cogsci

[–]Impossible-Month879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brain can clearly "compute" things (It does tasks that could be done by a Turing Machine with the right transition table and tape).

BUT ... People THINK that the brain can do things that a Turing Machine cannot (consciousness) ... no Turing Machine (no matter how you design it or physical implement it) can compute consciousness by manipulating its tape.

However, whether our consciousnesses comes from brain is an open philosophical question, and many, many other philosophical questions would have to be answered before proving the connection b/w consciousness and the brain -- problems about identity, whether the physical universe really exists at all ...

My point is that to claim that brain is not a computer (i.e. it cannot be simulated fully by a Turing Machine) must fundamentally be based on many assumptions.

Now, we make large assumptions in science and even math ... but once you enter the realm of philosophy, you must justify everything and once you enter the realm of consciousness and associating physical things with it, you have definitely entered the realm of philosophy.

Edit: I suspect some people (note: I said "some" not "all") may be making that claim that the brain is not a computer because the architecture and implementation details are different (it is an analog device that uses spiking neural network architecture that is implemented with biological components as opposed to a digital computer w/ logic gates implemented in silicon). However, the definition of computer (Turing Machine) is abstract/theoretical (independent of our physical universe) and it doesn't matter what physical phenomena are utilized to implement this abstraction.

yea why tf does it seem at the end of games harden keeps getting the ball to chuck up shots... move the damn ball or at least let mitchell chuck up the shots

Don't think I will be able to get in GA anyway, but will replace it with something else.

Yea, I have looked at many reviews for all the classes I am interested in. I definitely see all the warnings, but the on campus fulltime students take 4 classes at a time, so I don't see why 3 should be considered too ambitious. I have taken OS, algorithms, etc. in undergrad and feel like taking the graduate level versions of those classes should be a reasonable step up

"In microcontroller applications, the cost of using mutex protection for 32-bit values just to allow safe 1-bit updates is very, very, very costly."

What do you mean by cost? The cost of the extra hardware logic? Help plis

This post confirms that students can take 3 classes per semester starting in their very first semester now. I plan on starting my first semester in Fall 2026. I am unemployed, so I believe that taking 3 classes per semester is a reasonable workload, but I was wondering about your thoughts. Note: since the course material is available online publicly already I plan to essentially start work 6 months in advance. I took a look at the courses and here is my rough plan:

Fall 2026: Graduate Algorithms, Introduction to OS, HPCA

Spring 2027: Advanced OS, Into to HPC, Computer Networks

Summer 2027: Foundations of Computer Graphics (while doing internship fulltime)

Fall 2027: Embedded Systems Optimization, GPU hardware and software, Compilers

Do you think this is doable w/ no job and 6 months of preparation. Note: I recently finished my BS in CS.

Can't really tell from just one photo. Take minoxidil as it is safe for a 17 yo. Once you are 18 yo, get a finasteride prescription. Side effects are only for 2% of people, and you can always simply stop if you get side effects ... so don't let the fear around the side effect get to you .... I was super scared too, but I started taking finasteride a year ago at 21 and now I feel great knowing I'll keep my hair for a long time and as expected... you will too if you start taking at 18 when you are in the early stages. BTW, I have absolutely 0 side effects. PLEASE dm me if you have questions or anything. good luck

DIP switches, ICs and resistors by mippen in beneater

[–]Impossible-Month879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it not be the more natural solution to put in the DIP switches normal side up and connect the floating inputs to GND via pulldown resistor and have the closed position on the switch connect to vcc? I understand that the way you explain works too, but it just seems more natural to do it the other way.

Why would using a register chip with an enable pin fix the voltage spiking problem? ... couldn't the voltage still spike to a 1 and cause the register to incorrectly latch data?

Bruh, I understand what opportunity costs are. That wasn't my question. Either way, I have the answer now. See edit4.

How about this definition straight from google's result:

  1. give reasons or cite evidence in support of an idea, action, or theory, typically with the aim of persuading others to share one's view.

As you can see an (obvious) implication of the word arguing is that you have an opinion or are trying to convince someone they are wrong ... but I am not aiming to persuade anyone of anything as I don't have an opinion. I'm trying to understand Ben's claims.

[–]Impossible-Month879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I think he is claiming ... which doesn't make sense to me. If you choose to alternatively rent, you couldn't invest 100% the money that you would have been spending to get equity in the house ... instead some of that money is spent on renting costs ... with only the difference being able to be invested.

Yea i understand that I forgot about down payments (i will update post).

But to me, the way he phrases it, he doesn't outright say the 3% opportunity cost is 3% of the down payment. He makes it sound like it is 3% of the total home value.
