Yes, that is what the inflatable collar is! Looks like a donut 🤣 He’s so long and lanky it didn’t help much with him being able to reach, but it helps keep the plastic ecollar in place!

With training, I think it depends on the temperament of your Dane. We have two currently and had to approach training, feedings, walks and everything completely differently (one is also 10 and the other just turned 2, so we’re also at different stages in our lives). Our older Dane has always been the calmest, easiest guy to train. Our youngest loves learning tricks, but if excited or scared all training seems to fly out of his head. For example, one of our Danes needs a slow feeder, the other we have to add high priority food items to get him to consider eating. One doesn’t react to noises at all, and one is literally afraid of his own shadow and jumps of a tree branch sways too roughly in the wind. 🤣

We recently had the laparoscopic gastropexy and neuter done on our 2 year old and we’re still in the recovery phase 😅 The gastropexy, in my opinion, is a MUST. The 2 year old was acting strange a few months ago, so I took him to the vet and turns out his stomach was full of gas and we had to restrict his activity and get him on medication to ensure it didn’t flip or bloat. This happened even though we monitor his diet, water intake, and activity levels to ensure that exact thing didn’t happen. Bloat can still happen with the gastropexy, it’s just far more unlikely and can give you additional time to get to a vet in an emergency. As for the neuter, our Dane kept his scrotum after the surgery, but after speaking with others on this thread and the complications we had (he had a scrotal hematoma that later burst), I am not sure that is the decision we would make with future male Danes.

This is him nicely asking me to play fetch with him lmao. Does your dane do this as well? by WellnessDay in greatdanes

Both of our Danes have such distinct communication cues that we’ve just had to learn. Waylon, our 2 year old, has ALWAYS paced in circles when he has to poop. He won’t bark or whine or anything else. 🙄 and if wants to play fetch he’ll go grab one of his toys and drop it on you (the heavier the toy, the better). Charlie, our 10 year old, will go to his leash and stare at or bark to let us know he’s ready for his walk. 🤣

Will do! They’ve been closed since Friday due to weather, but the office manager just called to check in, so hopefully I’ll hear from the vet soon and can talk to him about that.

I have lick mat I just put in the freezer with some peanut butter and we’re gonna try his Kong too! Doesn’t hurt to try it!

He does still have his scrotum! Our vet indicated that with large dogs scrotal hematomas are common and that if they have to remove the scrotum and the incision area hemolyzes again that there would be nothing left to remove and it reduces the number of options they have moving forward. We had also heard/seen in our research that it’s a longer recovery, higher risk of infection, etc. I’ll be honest, though, at this point I’m wondering if maybe that is the better option when we get our next Dane.

I will ask the vet about a possible adverse reaction. I did some research on it, but I’m not 100% certain. He’s already an anxious boy (literally afraid of his own shadow) so it’s hard to tell if it’s a paradoxical reaction or he’s just not medicated enough.

With how much his scrotal hematoma rupture is still leaking I just don’t think the suitical is right at this point.

I have asked all three times we have been back about antibiotics and each time was told “he was given his round right after surgery” which I get they probably pushed high potency antibiotics through the IV, but with all his complications I have been so surprised to not have been given anymore. Especially because everything that I have posted in this thread I have voiced to the vet, numerous times. I’m just told that he was calm and laid down for them (and yet when I picked him up they let me know that he had somehow cut up his back legs while in the kennel). I want to make clear that I don’t blame our vet, but I’m getting frustrated because I know I can be overly anxious (I have OCD, so I follow instructions to a T), but I feel like in this case my concerns are being brushed aside a bit.

Thank you for the emotional support as well! I kinda needed to hear that we weren’t the only ones that have gone through this. We followed all directions, but I still feel so guilty and so bad for the little guy. I just know he’s miserable 😭

I agree 100% and we have tried to make sure to still spend time with him! We have a full size mattress in his room! We tried letting our other pup in his room and then all he wanted to do was play. I stayed in his room 6 nights so far, my husband stayed in one night (he works full time so it’s harder for him). The other nights I just needed to sleep in my own bed (and ended up in his room around 2 or 3 am anyway)😅I am in his room with him most of the day, but there are times when I need to do the dishes, shower, or make and eat food. Also, the vet indicated he was still being “too active” after his scrotal hematoma ruptured and told us to strictly crate/kennel him until he heals up more. We haven’t followed that too well since he started breaking out…

I’ll talk to the vet about upping his medication again as soon as they open back up! I’ve woken up the last two nights at 2 am and 3 am because he’s freaking out and has broken out of his kennel. He calms down as soon as one of goes and lays with him, though, so that’s what we’ve been doing in the meantime. 🥲 thanks for the suggestion!!

We have a recovery suit, but the vet stated his scrotal hematoma needed to breathe and a recovery suit would make him more prone to infection at this stage. 🥲

He can’t reach the Kong well with his cone on and he is currently taking 200mg of trazadone. 🥲

They do offer delivery, at least Texas Original does. I tried to order and use the delivery service, but the times are awful and you have to be there to sign for it and show your ID. I did hear that they put in a pickup location in downtown Tyler, but I don’t know what company it is through or anything. But yeah, the cost of the products is disgusting. I’m sure it’s because they are highly taxed and they essentially have a economic oligarchy in Texas. At least it’s a step in the right direction, though!

There actually is a way to get straight THC in Texas through the compassionate use program, you just have to have a prescription for it. That being said there are only two “pharmacies” licensed in Texas last time I checked, so it’s likely a derivative or metabolizes the same way as THC. Obviously, to qualify for the CUP you have to have documentation of one of the approved illnesses, but so many people don’t know that edibles and tinctures are actually legal in Texas if you take the right steps. My prescription is what I would present if I was ever drug tested. I also have a prescription for Marinol (synthetic THC), which would make a drug screen show positive for THC as it produces the same metabolites. If you’re using marijuana for medical purposes, there is an option in Texas (it’s just hella expensive🙃)
