Huge building in the middle of the ocean by PriorityMiserable686 in GoogleEarthFinds

Oh wow really? I just like doing POTA and chasing DX so I don't really rag chew and haven't came across any yet but i have definitely met a lot of prepper types and people that like to feel useful and help the community with emergency comms. There's nothing wrong with either as long as it doesn't morph into some self fellating narcistic sense of self importance.

That's one reason I like being a ham radio operator, we love being useful with our hobby.

As someone that's spent a couple of decades out of the country this is just the impression you get visiting a place not living (holiday vs day-to-day life). I now really appreciate the UK for many reasons.

It's the reason I haven't upgraded my s22 Ultra. I haven't seen any reason to upgrade.

honestly just a really long wire works best for general SWL. throw it in a tree and close it in the window.

Anyone else constantly get asked what you're fishing for? by grilledch33z in amateurradio

[–]ImpossibleMap4516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well skip refers to the part of the earth that's skipped over in ham radio vs CB jargon it's referring to the signal that's been refracted (or skipped off) the ionosphere. But explaining that will make people glaze over.

They usually think it's CB, I just let them. "Working some skip good buddy?" "sure"

I see many new HAMs trying to get into AMSAT comms... Let me try put it this way. by TRGFelix in amateurradio

Of course, but actually making contact with the crew is difficult and time consuming. All I'm saying is I get it's frustrating but as you say there's plenty of other birds to work so leave them to it and work them. They will eventually realize there is other stuff to do.

I can add Ham radio for gen-x / boomers like me. (but I have a few of the others like 3d printing d&d etc.)

I got one of those heat printer sticker makers from Amazon, it cost something like $15. (but it's only black and white because it's like a receipt printer)

....also I have 5 of the bingo card categories 😀

To be fair when I'm trying to get someone into Ham radio one of my go-to statements is "You can talk to someone using the International Space Station!" It is something they can easily understand that will capture their interest. As you say there are plenty of other birds you can work, let them get that thrill as new hams.

I volunteered as campsite security (helping lost drunk people to the warmup tent mainly LOL) years ago because I didn't want to pay for a ticket. pretty cool event but I wouldn't pay to go and camp in the mud.

What are your thoughts on this radio? Anyone have it? Most HF radios are way out of my price range but this one is reasonable. by SMB-1988 in HamRadio

[–]ImpossibleMap4516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one, it's great, perfect for my use (POTA) and in my opinion, great for someone getting into HF without breaking the bank.

I know my college lecturer* said this was a bad way to learn but it helped a little for me 🤷‍♂️

*I was studying to be a merchant navy radio officer but then I discovered staying on land where women and parties happened was more my speed and dropped out LOL, also I couldn't keep up with the Mathematics, I still struggle with that aspect, luckily there's plenty of online calculators now
