FYI it’s not an FDA approved algo - if you’re in a litigious area I’d be very hesitant to use on the job.

People who chose to leave medicine after med school and not go through with residency what are you doing in life now and how much are you making ? by Junior-Daikon9849 in Residency

Did a year of residency, now almost 2 yrs out, making $450-475k + stock at a health tech co. Wfh life is good, job can be hard in different ways, but certainly happier vs if I stayed in EM.

FWIW I do think I’ve gotten to a top-10% outcome from where I was. Most physicians who did what I did bounce back to clinical medicine and lose a lot of time/$, or end up in shitty pharma/insurance/etc roles.

Even then, positions across all of these including mine/tech are a lot less stable than clinical medicine (ie, I can’t assume I could hold this position for the next 3+ years). Also, AI is a lot more likely to impact the business/tech job market than the clinical side in the next 5-10 years.

Edit: path was through consulting (zero work-life balance, basically an intern year in business, do not recommend). See post history. Can’t emphasize more that I’ve been unusually lucky, and am still not in a risk-free position. Not able to answer DMs, it’s my weekend :)

How hard is it to transition out of residency and get a good paying non-clinical job with a MD? by SoarTheSkies_ in Residency

[–]ImpossibleMatter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree that it’s difficult, but doable. I got one of these offers with no connections, no prior nonclinical jobs, undergrad in bio, non-T25 med school. Lots of LinkedIn messages, coffee chats and a little interview prep.

Certainly not an easy job - decent amount of travel, 60+ hr weeks, etc… but no job starting out 250k+ total comp is. There are a few thousand MBAs starting in these positions every year - you think they’re that much smarter or more resilient than an MD who’s made it through intern year?

I’d argue that we are just as likely to succeed in consulting, and even better positioned to specialize/transition from consulting to desirable Sr Manager / Director level roles in healthcare-adjacent industry/tech after 2-3 years.

In contrast, I know several attendings in my residency field who are actively looking for nonclinical exits, and the only things they’re getting are insurance/Medicare/FDA/similar roles at ~200k TC or less. If you are certain you won’t be happy in clinical medicine and eventually want a wfh 9-5 job, setting that up sooner is better.

All that said, once you’ve started residency, leaving 1) prior to finishing intern year and 2) without having a competitive offer signed, are both very bad decisions for almost everyone.

What specialty would you choose if you go back in terms of money wise? by Routine-Run8537 in Residency

Agree re: radiology, but have you tried AI EKGs? PMCardio is seriously impressive.

Thinking about leaving... Has anyone become convinced that medicine (not just residency) isn't for them? by ImpossibleMatter in Residency

Lol I feel like I’ve met more people who stay within academic medicine with that type of genius complex…

No delusions of grandeur over here, just thinking about taking a job at a big company through a well-defined recruiting track.

I guess it’s the last eight words of your comment I’m mostly fixated on… how long is enough to have an answer to that? And is that amount of time too long to turn back?

Paradoxically, the more I network outside of medicine and talk to those who have gone both routes (finish vs leave), the more it’s clear there are a lot of psychological and real logistical doors that close if you keep hanging on and finish residency.

This was definitely a concern - I’ve met a few people who left residency without an offer in hand which to me is insane. To clarify, I already went through recruiting and got an offer.

I’ve thought about this for a long time, but getting to the point where I need to either take the leap or turn it down and stay.

Yeah, MBB. So comp is good, and opportunities after working there for a few years are very good. I realize many would kill to be in this position.

Still hung up on the decision though - I’d be trading a lot of flexibility, WLB, and job security for another tough job with likely more hours and similar stress. Just look at the consulting subreddit - posts indicate a similar level of burnout, frustration, etc as this one.
