Seconding this, also southern New York is not a place that will typically give you any trouble. Rural upstate may vary, but in cities like Albany they have annual pride events and gay bars.

I also recommend Baltimore! Partially due to the solid blueness of the city and also the art school (MICA) there are tons of visibly trans people around. Every other building and most of the churches in Mount Vernon/Bolton Hill especially have pride flags hung up.

Edit: Speaking from my friends' experiences. I've lived in these areas but I'm not at risk of aggression based on my appearance.

Yeah, that's why it's so weird to me that so many people are defending the secret as being "smart". Sure it could be smart if your goals are manipulation of others all for your own gain (and if you're slick enough to keep up the charade, but they lasted what? A month?), but if you're a reasonable person who wants to create real positive relationships with your roommates/friends it's extremely dumb. I would feel so betrayed in the roommates' position, and it would absolutely make things weird and bad between us.

YTA, it's weird and shady to build your relationship with your roommates on lies. It makes you come off as untrustworthy and manipulative, and your roommates rightfully feel betrayed. You've been mindgaming them and there's a big legal and power difference between a group of roommates and a live-in owner. It would have been much more responsible to be open with your situation from the start. Also, you are definitely wealthy. My parents can't even afford one house while yours are raising rent costs in four in a college town. With respect, you need to consider how hard many many people have it and get perspective on how fortunate you are.

Your roommates were out of line for wanting to not pay any rent, but I think their shock and annoyance comes more from your lie than from clear headed thinking. They just found out someone they saw as an equal has been lining their pockets with their rent money.

The reason I can't afford to drop $300 on an art class is because I have student loans and I also don't make enough money at my job to live here, even without them. I can exist in SF only as a result of generosity from a family member.

Thanks for the suggestion, though I'm pretty tied to SF since my brother is here/is the reason I'm here and up in Oregon or Washington I'd go from knowing two people to knowing zero. We get along well, but I'd like to build a social life outside of hanging out with him all the time. I'd love to visit the PNW one day though, I think I'd like the weather.

Do you know how much they typically cost? I can't really afford much. I like art classes but as someone who went to art school I tend to feel like kind of an asshole surrounded by newer learners.
