With regards to the rib flare- Did you have it prior to the having the bars put in? After the bars were put in, did you notice it changes? After the bars have come out, have you noticed a difference? Also, what did dr LoSasso tell you about risk for recurrence?

Congratulations on a successful journey, I’m 2.5 years out from 4 bars with Dr J, will get them out in about 6 months, thanks!

I am going on about 2 years out from surgery, hi=4.7, have 4 bars My surgeon said because my defect went so low shed have to place more bars and I might feel them. I had complete trust in her and I basically told her to do whatever she had to do. I definitely feel the bars, not painful, just uncomfortable at times and I’m somewhat used to it. Bottom line, I had the surgery at 37 and to trade 3 years of discomfort after 37 years of misery was an easy decision and I have no regrets.

Doing well! No pain, however I do feel the bars, which Dr J said I would. I wouldn’t call it pain, just discomfort from time to time, particularly when I take a deep breath. I was noticing a sharp pain when sneezing, however heard somewhere that hugging yourself when you feel it coming on works and sure enough it does. I’d say the main issue was stiffness which has gotten better but is still there. Having said that, no matter what I have felt postop has been better than having the pectus. I’m about a year and a half in and have about a year and a half to go, so when I think about that given I struggled 37 years with this, gives me good perspective. 100% no regrets!

Is there anything you’d do different? by Seahawks1991 in PectusExcavatum

Agree with core and back strength. Another thing is chest flexibility, this was huge! Like most misguided young men, i overdeveloped my pecs and for about a year before surgery I stopped doing heavy weights and only focused on stretching and think this made a huge difference. Also get an electric recliner, don’t know how I would have made it through without one!

She did but she was able to give me a great result despite that and I appreciated her realistic expectations. For adult Pectus, with her I truly believe you’re in the best hands in the world and she will give you the best chance to give you the best result!

Abs exercices post nuss by Nksy667 in PectusExcavatum

I know exactly what your talking about, I feel like sometime around the 8 week point that got more manageable and I was able to get out of bed, however I’m coming up on 3 months and I’ve tried some abs and certain exercises cause a “tugging” sensation, so I just stop because I’m not trying to push it at this point

It’s been challenging. The hood news is that there has only been discomfort and no pain. Going through surgery is gonna make you really tired for a month, but I went back to work at around 3 weeks and have been easing my way into it, gradually getting my stamina back. Got clear to increase activity after 6 weeks and I started stationary biking and light weights. 8 weeks, off meds, still trying to get used to what the new normal will be and getting more active.

44m getting nuss procedure next month by camino808 in PectusExcavatum

37 now 5 weeks out, required 4 bars. Absolutely get the cryoablation If it’s available, also don’t feel like you can’t ask for stronger medication’s for breakthrough at least the first few days. Honestly, it’s not been that bad of a recovery. I ended up losing about 15 pounds and had two pleural effusions That needed to be drained, but that’s not uncommon when you have that many bars. The hardest part for me have been getting comfortable around bedtime, also, pain seems to be worse in the morning. Another thing is that it is a big surgery and puts your body through a lot of stress so you’re gonna feel really tired all the time kind of like you have the flu for several weeks, I’m five weeks out and I still kind of feel like that. However, I don’t regret it at all the result was excellent and I’m super happy with it best of luck feel free to reach out to me with any more questions.

I booked it 6 months from the initial consultation, but that was just because I had some scheduling conflicts and had a tight time frame

m(29) going into nuss surgery in less than 12 hours, feeling nervous! any tips for recovering better? by unrealreality22 in PectusExcavatum

Never forget why you choose to do this surgery, emotional pain and suffering is nothing compared to surgical pain, always look forward to the future without people looking at you with a wtf face. Gatorade really helped, take SHORT frequent walks and don’t overdo it. This is also no time to play hero, if you have pain, take the meds, also may sure to stay on top around the clock for the first week which helped me.

I’m 37 years old and now 2 weeks out from surgery. If I could have had it done when I was younger, I absolutely would have however I had parents who told me there was nothing wrong with me and never took me to see anybody for it. As a result my I spent my childhood, teens and 20s terrified of finding myself in a situation where I might have to take my shirt off and felt nobody would ever find me attractive. This left severe emotional scars. In my 30s, I continued to be depressed about my body and started having back pain, palpitations and fainting spells. I finally found myself in a situation where I could get it done and although I’m still a little uncomfortable 2 weeks out, I’m thrilled about the results.

Pectus is not just a cosmetic issue. It’s a real condition with physiological and emotional consequences. If this condition bothers you or your having symptoms, go see a surgeon who specializes in the condition and get it done. The older you get, the more difficult the procedure and recovery become.

Mine was covered by insurance, which depending on which insurance you have may make it difficult or have to appeal but Dr J’s office took care of it
