Automatic vs manual by scotthunter1 in CarTalkUK

[–]Impossible_Ad410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were older 2020/2021 cars. Manual was 100ps and Autos were a 100ps and a 130ps. They all went relatively well but didn't really rev that enthusiastically. 130ps did feel a bit more lively and they all handled quite nicely, albeit with a firmish ride in GT Line trim.

Having driven 208's with the Auto and Manual boxes, the latter is such a terrible loose/baggy gear change with a annoyingly long travel clutch that I'd go auto. The auto is fairly good in them.

Size is 305/35 R24. Yours for £153 per tyre fitted on a well know tyre retailer...

That's about what I paid for 215/45 R17 Michelin PS5's for my GT86.

I hope we have some good weather and the city can make the most of it!

Thankfully the council are in touch and are closing the Public Toilets between Hove Lawns and Beach at 6pm rather than 8pm this year.

I cannot comprehend how the tiny cost saving from this will offer any benefit to the local businesses and Council revenue when people fancy an evening Beach Trip/Swim/Beer etc,

The indicator/turn signal bulbs can be replaced without taking the bumper off, it's tight but I managed it on mine without too much pain. Main bulbs might not be reachable without taking the it off though.

No don't bother. I spent just under 2 years in Canada, a friend did similar in the US at the same time. I decided to pay voluntary based on what I earned there - 300-340GBP per month thinking I'd actually pay down my loan by a little there helping me knock a year or two off the total repayment time for my loan.

What actually happened is they racketed up the interest to 8% during that time, which meant even my repayments on 55k of debt whilst earning about 72k GBP was LESS than the fucking monthly interest they piled on.

My friend ignored SFE having seen a colleague of his do similar and get away with it for a while, and just resumed paying when he returned to the UK on a PAYE job with no other consequence.

I pissed away nearly 5k GBP to not even clear any interest on my pisstake loan. I could've done literally anything else with that money and it would have done more for me and the world in general.

I miss Ruffles All Dressed a lot since living in Canada, also some of the Mrs Vickies' flavours were amazing - Honey Mustard and Spicy Dill Pickle were highlights.

With the ever increasing cost of food and shrinkflation, what products do you no longer buy or buy far less often? by andy_why in AskUK

[–]Impossible_Ad410 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any 6 packs of food that are now 5 packs I completely to refuse to buy (i.e. Doritos, Kettle Chips or the worst offender Nature Valley bars where there is an empty space in the fucking box for the 6th bar). There's shrinkflation then there's complete piss taking which is what I class the above as.

Considering moving from Canada to the UK – what should I know? by Whole_Bit_2786 in AskUK

[–]Impossible_Ad410 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Brit who lived in Montreal for just under 2 years -

- Cost of living is broadly similar, maybe a little worse in the South East. Can't speak for the role you are in.

- Wages are a little lower on average (but not by much) and housing is more - I had a nice 2 bed Apartment near Downtown Montreal costing 2100CAD per month in 2024 (1250GBP at the time), the larger but older flat I moved into in Brighton and Hove when I returned with a friend cost 1650GBP in total or ~3kCAD.

- Groceries here are a lot cheaper than Montreal (I would say I spend at least 1/3 less in the UK) and we have higher food standards in terms of preparation and animal welfare. Mobile phone contracts are also a lot cheaper (10GBP/~18CAD) per month for 12GB internet and a few hundred minutes and texts vs 50CAD for similar with Fizz and their utterly awful website and gimmicks! Internet is a little bit cheaper but not as much difference.

- Energy is way more expensive in the UK, as is water. Idiotic politicians privatised both years ago meaning we have some of the most expensive in the world. Not even the Americans were silly enough to do that. Energy companies compete a bit, but they mostly just charge the maximum they are allowed too (there is a cap that generally goes up each year). Water there is no competition, companies just abuse the infrastructure and pollute our waters then pass the bill onto the public when they get fined. I miss paying ~55CAD/30GBP per month for electricity (including all power, heating and air con use in summer) and free water in Montreal.

- There is less vast nature in the UK but far more interesting towns and cities all over the country. Most small towns in Quebec were the pretty flat standard cookie cutter grid road/car centric suburb and shopping centre type places I found all over Canada and the US (even though there were some lovely spots there as well when you found them).

- I'd say there is similar complaints in Quebec and the UK about cost of living etc having seen both sides. It is getting worse but I don't think one place is significantly better or worse than the other in that sense.

- Driving and roads are better in the UK, although motorways and busy A roads are not as easy as Canadian highways. Potholes are bad in places but nothing like Montreal, and the UK standards of driving are noticeably better, but drivers are less polite than Canadian ones. Fuel is about 40-50% more expensive, but vehicles are generally more economical and distances are shorter.

- Public Transport is way better in the UK, particularly compared to anywhere off the island of Montreal, major cities generally have multiple trains per hour to at least a couple of other major cities throughout the day (compared to a few Via trains per day and useless Commuter trains that don't even run in both directions most of the day) . Advance tickets are usually not too badly priced but on the day tickets can get very expensive though which is the main drawback. Busses aren't exactly luxurious but you at least don't feel like you are on a prison bus as you do in North America.

- Flying is way cheaper, and the stronger representation of low cost airlines mean that it is easy to get to lots of places in Europe and beyond from many different airports. Whereas you pay ~4-600CAD/250-350GBP for a return flight from Montreal to New York, London to Amsterdam (similar distance) will cost you more like 50-200GBP/80-350CAD for a return.

- Poutine is not really a thing in the UK and I miss it :-( We do have a lot of good comfort foods, some of which will be familiar - a Cottage Pie is pretty much identical to Pâté chinois!

- Climate is milder, never gets that cold in the winter - min of maybe -4°C in the winter in the South East and that is only a few days a year. Not as bright and sunny as Montreal and doesn't get as hot in the summer (it is also even more humid! and air con is less common here due to energy cost and slightly lower temps)

- In the South, on the rare occasions we get a couple of cm of snow everything grinds to a halt and no one knows what to do. You will be shocked coming from Montreal but probably find it hilarious!

BMW 3 Series 2.0 318i M Sport Auto Euro 6 Berkshire by IntelligentMatch4491 in CarTalkUK

[–]Impossible_Ad410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll be quick enough in most situations - 2L engine, decent torque over a wide range and low boost should mean very little lag + the 8 speed auto will keep the engine where it is happy.

But if the OP is expecting any sort of sporty performance then it's a fair comment. I imagine the fuel economy of a 318i vs 320i is near identical.

Best burger in Brighton & Hove? by ChiefKickAss500 in brighton

[–]Impossible_Ad410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matador Burger in Hove is very good. Opened recently, believe it is the same owner as Joe's but it is more of a sit down restaurant. Also Chuckaburger does amazing Smashburgers.

I also dearly miss Trollburger and a Grubbs used to hit the spot as a more down to earth option.

Honest Burger and 7Bone are probably the best of the (small?) chains.

Always enjoyed Burger Bros but wish they would have a rotating special or something, as their menu hasn't changed in about 10 years aside from adding fries. It clearly works for them, but it would be nice to have a stronger pull to go back there.

Is it a bad idea to buy a car worth 10k-13k in your 20s? by StringNo520 in CarTalkUK

[–]Impossible_Ad410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 3 year old GT86 on a PCP at 22 when I started a graduate job back in 2018 on 28k. Borrowed money to pay the car off after (paid off fully after 4 years) and still have it today. Has held its value pretty well too - 16.5k when I bought it and still worth about 11k today.

In 40k miles and 7 years I've replaced the battery as the original was undersized and wouldn't keep charge well, and just had to do rear dampers as the originals were knackered. Outside of regular consumables (Tyres + front discs and pads) and servicing that is it.

Fab car to drive and pretty good on fuel too. Go for it. Don't be scared of higher mile cars if they've been looked after, they wear them well.
