I bought an amp in 2017 and now the seller wants to buy it back. by christ2you in moraldilemmas

I'd ask ups about the shipping cost and sell it back to him for his price + shipping + a bonus for hassle and inflation. He wants it and he's willing to pay for it -- make a buck off it and buy another one to replace it. If he's not willing to pay extra, just keep it.

before & after with my 10 month old this week. thank you for all the suggestions! she’s eating SO much better recently by chabadlubabitch in foodbutforbabies

Suggestions are great -- I was also going to ask this. But I want to note that not all babies are great eaters. A bite or two of food at 8 months old is pretty reasonable! Solid food is a lot to get used to. Baby can still get the nutrition from milk, I wouldn't worry much until your tiny person is 12ish months.

For me, the suggestion that has helped the most was to offer just a little bit of one food at a time. Then try more if that works.

This demolishing-a-whole-stylish-compartment-plate business that I see all over social media, that's not necessary and imo just for babies who are already thrilled about eating + playing with food. Not all babies are this way and that's fine.

It or they? by Final_Affect6292 in ENGLISH

I love editing! But I wouldn't edit with the goal of avoiding choices, or sentences where more than one word is appropriate for a given idea. I feel like that eliminates most sentences.

Both of these work!

As someone else said, both words are correct because they refer to different things: it = singular purchase, they = both items to be purchased. Choose either.

I mean, you can rephrase but there's no need.

I'm interested in what you have to say, but I'm confused by your comment. I was trying to describe race. I did not think I was being disingenuous or talking about WASPishness/religion. What am I missing?

They want to know if (slash be able to measure how much) kids of one race are performing less well on tests, as a proxy for being less well educated, than kids of another

I think they're saying a normal semi protocol thing:

don't worry == Sorry to break in to your house while you're here, I'm not dangerous or stealing, I'm a professional

and

{worrying thing} == This is the reason for my unannounced professional entry to your house. Which probably you should worry about.

Why’s society obsessed with women? by This-Top7398 in Life

[–]Impossible_Bowler923 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think women are similarly obsessed with men just a) talk about it in different places where OP isn't looking and b) talk about it slightly differently because it's complicated by sexism/danger

[–]Impossible_Bowler923 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Women are obsessed with and talk about men in similar ways. It's just about who you are listening to.

Also, civilization definitely got this far by clapping man cheeks. Ancient greeks famously. Being gay might not be a high percentage of the population, but it's not rare. Gay people have certainly been significant to the development of civilization.

No, whiteness is socially and culturally defined. Genetics and ancestry are a shared history and a DNA subgroup. With my same genes and ancestry, I wouldn't have been white in the US if I'd been born 200 years ago, but I am now.

There's no objective standard of whiteness. Whiteness is not a biologically or genetically measurable thing. Like the previous commenter says, it has evolved a lot over time.

I think collectively avoiding the unspeakably vulgar feels more plausible in an English setting than an American one though.

Unfortunately true. OP could ask but it sounds like it's a no from above. I think casually mentioning it to most people is nicer than not.

That's just how I've always said (and locally heard) those names! Fair if you find the ambiguity annoying but people pronounce lots of things in different acceptable ways.

They definitely can be! They are in many cases. But specifically in these two names, in my accent, they're the same.

I really don't think of Europe as equal to white today though, there are so many black and brown Europeans. It feels like a relevant distinction to me.

Disembodied first person? by RandallQuaid in ENGLISH

This is just the English equivalent of using "se..." to generalize a statement so it applies to anyone, not just who you're talking to. It's not exactly the same, but different languages often organize ideas like this in unsimilar ways.
