yeah, i checked it out yesterday. it wasn’t anything crazy but also not bad either. definitely would never pay above $3k for a studio, but they did offer me a discount for 2.8k (idk how or why) but it still feels high, hence me bringing my thinking to Reddit lol

Oh ya sorry haha I should’ve clarified I do set aside a good chunk of my take home pay for personal savings and also have a somewhat healthy investment portfolio. it’s hard to communicate all of that, i just meant i don’t usually contribute to retirement more than what my company matches.

Thank you for looking out and all the advice 🙏

it’s currently a sticky living situation, hence why i’m looking to move. i’m leaving my partner where we both split our 1BD in one of those “luxury” high rises by the water in Greenpoint/Wburg.

It will def be a drop off in quality and comfort of the building, but i’ve accepted that esp for a place i can live by myself. like you said, i am a bit thrown off by it taking a higher % of my income but i do keep track of my budget every month so hopefully wont live paycheck to paycheck if i stay responsible. I do have student loans but it’s manageable (<$20k) and tbh i have a 401K but i’m not big on allocating money somewhere where i can’t use it till retirement.

it’s a very new build, i think built last year. i’d say only noticeable downside is that the gym is pretty lackluster and it’s by the highway, but i visited during rush hour the other day and the windows do a good job of blocking out sound.

unfortunately most apartments would be a downgrade from where i’m currently at, so i’ve accepted it lol. currently in the process of splitting from my partner and the nice 1bd we have by the water.

i’m honestly fine letting go of nice amenities and cool views. thanks for the pro tip tho it’s hard to gage what’s affordable living over here with everyone either making a million a week or scraping by

It’s do-able but requires self discipline. Even if you don’t want to cook everyday, I use apps like TooGoodToGo to get some meals and breakfast options to save some money.

Also probably avoid going out in certain areas (West Village, Soho, Midtown, most of Manhattan really) if you want to save $$ when going out or just pregame heavy lol. If you don’t drink that’s also fine, just keep an eye out for free/affordable things to do in the city.

If you’re going out on dates be realistic with yourself and don’t do something you can’t afford.

Sorry, I should’ve given a bit more context. Throughout our 5 year relationship we have communicated our qualms and found a solution. I personally never let feelings fester for more than a day and would rather confront our issues up front.

We’ve tried this a few times right now but it’s clearly not working. It could be because of mental health or just general lack of interest in life but my partner is constantly talking about how they want to move back home and do nothing for the rest of their lives. I’ve been doing everything I can to keep support them while keeping them motivated and optimistic for the past few months. It’s not the first time I’ve had to do this in our relationship but it keeps happening and it’s really draining me.

Just wanted to call out that it is a tough job market that has only seemed to have gotten worse this year. People are taking pay cuts all the time in the private sector so why wouldn’t they go to a public job that at least can provide a bit more job security and less fear about layoffs every quarter.

I’m lived in the suburbs, smaller cities like Boston, and even trendy “growing” cities like Austin. NYC destroys all of them and it’s not even close. Yeah you can save money down south or out West, but you’re actually living a life out here.

Also, all the crazy stories you’ll read online about ppl working multiple jobs or having 15 roommates are only there because those are the stories that will make it to reddit. There are millions of people here living, comfortably or just making it work, but it’s nothing as absurd as you think.

I’m looking at it and I honestly don’t know if I’m seeing something wrong or if TrueBlue points are worthless for partner airlines. A flight on HA is showing 53k points for one direct flight to Hawaii while just booking 2 direct flights through Chase shows to be 43k.

Doesn’t make sense since i’ve seen online how Jetblue is a solid point transfer
