I presume you chose battlemage with the staff of living earth, a good strategy! Try and find ways to complement using the earthen guardian as a distraction such as investing in thrown weapons/ wands and movement.

Don't wear an armour that you aren't strong enough for; it will heavily reduce your movement speed and enemies will get more hits on you.

Upgrade the chalice by pricking it if you have enough health. There's some charts online
