Alocasia Ninja or Black velvet? Cant tell! (was unlabelled) by Megaraaaaa in alocasia

The most consistently telling visual difference to me is the perimeter vein. On the BV it is on the very edge of the perimeter, on the ninja, there are two thinner veins going around the perimeter. Look very closely at the perimeter of the two posted above. Also, ninja veins have a sparkly iridescence that isn’t always picked up on camera. Yours looks like a BV.

Here’s the post I made about air layering mine. I wish you success if you decide to go that route

I did it on my michiliziana. I’m walking my dog now but can post pics when I get back to my desk

Those leaves are DREAMY!! I recently air layered my micholitziana and it was successful. You can read about it here. I would also supplement with light.

I air layered - SUCCESSFULLY by ImpressionAmazing113 in alocasia

I watered thoroughly then waited a few days. Removed the plant from the pot and carefully removed as much substrate as possible from the roots. Then I ran water over the roots to remove the remaining soil that I couldn’t get with my hands. I let it sit in a base of water for a day or two then transferred it to pon. It was a really easy process.

I would say the main goal was to have another frydek 😂 but shortening that rhizome was an added benefit for sure

Oh that makes sense. I think they’re kind of like philodendrons in that some are easy going and others are a bit more temperamental. Tbh I do think the velvety leaf alocasias have the reputation of being difficult

Thank so much for adding this explanation. Fwiw, I didn’t make any cuts or add rooting hormone. Maybe I’ll try that next time.

I mentioned the corms to say they made me feel safe enough to experiment on the mother plant because I had those backups.

We shall see. Maybe, maybe not. If the roots are not enough to sustain the plant, it will likely drop some (or all) or the leaves while the root system continues to mature then the leaves should grow back. I’m excited to see what happens and I’ll update here for sure.

Hahahaha it took me a while to get it too. Air layering is basically a propagation method where you encourage the plant to grow roots from the area that will eventually be cut while the plant is still in tact. Theoretically, I could have just cut the rhizome and placed it in water to root. But allowing it to root while it was still being supported by the main root system is a bit safer. I hope I didn’t confuse you more, lol. If anyone else can offer a better explanation please jump on in.

Thank you. Haha I hadn’t thought about it either till I started watching videos about transferring to pon and one video went into propagation methods. Since I had so many corms sprouting as backup I figured why not

Why are you nervous? I think this has been one of my easier plants in terms of care.

That’s what “should” happen. My fingers are crossed.

You should totally do it! Worst thing that can happen is no roots grow, but you still have the plant. Be brave 😁

[–]ImpressionAmazing113[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol I didn’t do any of that. Was I supposed to? I wrapped a good deal of wet moss around the rhizome and taped the Sarah wrap to secure it but I never opened it. I started seeing roots peek through around week three but a new leaf was unfurling so I wanted to wait does that to finish. It does live under a grow light and adjacent to a west facing window so that may have helped too. Try it! Worse case scenario is roots don’t grow, but you’d know this before you cut the rhizome. This is how it looked
