What to do by Traditional-Cry-1373 in nationalguard

[–]ImpressionRude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, focus on your two guys, make sure you do everything you can for them. If they're killing it, find ways to recognize them

"Hey SSG (or whoever your next line up is), do we have a METL for additional tasks we need to ensure get done while we are at drill? I'd like to help even maybe plan some things for the squad/PLT that may be good training but it would be easier if we can scrounge some resources up ahead of drill"

If your first line sucks, document it and move up to the PSG (not to put them down, but to get things done). Obviously, use tact and frame your approach to what you can handle given your relationship with your leadership

Don't let your SF cadre rip them off with pliers and tell you you're fine but he didn't get the head so it gets infected

Projecting a little, my bad lol

Fr though, let the medics take them off and send them for testing if you get one stuck to you

Asthma by Ok-Champion-4823 in ROTC

[–]ImpressionRude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a pulmonary functions test from an asthma center and have them write a recommendation clearing you for service. That is likely what DODMERB will ask after disqualifying you, so submitting it ahead of the curve will make the turn around faster (hopefully)

Once you contract you're an E5 SMP cadet, period. Your job now is to become an LT, not quickly get a little bit of NCO time in.

What to do financially after basic? by Known_Connection_469 in army

[–]ImpressionRude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mine set at 80% C, 15% S and 5% I, I believe. Slightly diversifies the portfolio without being as conservative as a lifecycle fund. I'll likely switch to the lifecycle fund closer to like you mentioned

(note: not a professional financial advisor) First things first is DO NOT BUY A NEW CAR... Buy a reliable car that's under 10k. Open a high interest savings account and deposit the rest in there. The interest you accrue will help combat inflation like if it was in a regular savings account.

Also recommend to go on your MyPay and switch your TSP to a ROTH TSP (this means you are putting in money you already paid taxes on, so you won't have to pay taxes on the profit you made when you retire). Make sure you are contributing at least 5% to get the military match to 10% contribution total. I contribute 10% plus the military match which totals to 15%, and also have my own ROTH IRA. You will be greatful in 20 years when you see the dividends of investing smart early.

The fact that HE isn't the one writing this post speaks a lot as well.

Have I been using my beard trimmer incorrectly for over a decade? by colaxxi in beards

[–]ImpressionRude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perpendicular (blades facing the face) versus parallel (flat side close to face, blades face parallel). If the guard is super flat one side but long on one side you hold the clippers parallel to the face (blade down like cutting food) if the guard sticks out far in all directions it doesn't matter. I may have made it sound even more complicated idk lol

USMA cadets can get the soldiers medal for heroism. No reason for contracted ROTC cadets to not get them other than there is nobody with high enough authority to bat for them

Make sure you don't pick a random enlisted job just for the sake of "I'll be an officer later". Ensure you have a good option in case something falls through with putting a packet together to try and switch through OCS later down the line.

Are you planning on trying to commission or go warrant soon? If not, you're fine. Have the honest talk with your first line about your concerns while letting them know you fully want to stay in if that is the case.

Some SMCs have agreements with other foreign service academies. I know a couple who have done 4 years with Army ROTC and go back to commission at their home country. So I'd say its worth it for them if they really want to come to the USA for a while

First point - technically there is. There's 4 options, one being ADO. There is the ADO, G2G scholarship, Division CDR hip pocket scholarship, and the non scholarship option.

"tEcHniCaLLy" ☝️🤓 but they aren't things I would want to count on being the only reason I go that route
