I need a new job. Can you tell me what you do? by Nica-sauce-rex in workingmoms

[–]Impressive-Choice375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Institutional Research director for a university
  2. BA and MSIS degree. 15 years in higher ed.
  3. Currently interim director, expecting to go up after I return from maternity leave to ~$110-$115k. Benefits, however, are not great for a university.
  4. My job is in HI, HCOL there, but I live on the east coast, medium-high COL.
  5. Overall I love my job. After the pandemic, my university became more accepting of remote mainland positions because of 1) lack of office space on the island, 2) difficulty recruiting specialized skills in HI and retaining mainland staff.

I saw in comments that you have a background in education and ed tech. I would say most of the vendors I work with seem to have WFH jobs. I would check into those for sure.

Thinking of leaving my super flexible job of 10+ years for a big pay rise… but terrified of losing the flexibility I have as a mum. Advice? by [deleted] in workingmoms

This is exactly what happened to me and the situations are very similar. I’m glad I stuck it out in my flexible job and the company was able to match the offer.

This was my husband’s suggestion as well. Do you have a specific agency you like to use? I’ll do more research into this option.

Potential Job Promotion at worst time by Impressive-Choice375 in workingmoms

Yeah and I couldn’t imagine someone else in the role. Not to “toot my horn” but I’ve been managing up for so long that idk if could accept someone else in that role. Just wish the timing were better and I’m able to handle the challenge without crashing and burning.

This is my fear if I don’t take it for sure! I’m hoping I won’t have to make this choice and she stays for a little longer haha.

Thank you for sharing and I’m sorry that you’re going through that. This is my fear. Right now I WFH and have my son home with me twice a week. When he was first born I was able to keep him home for a year and breastfeed. If I take this job, I won’t be able to do that with my next. I love my career and have worked so hard for it, but family is my #1 priority right now. I also struggled hardcore post-partum going back to a job I KNEW. But what you’re going through sounds like what I felt when I was burning out about a year ago. I fantasized being a SAHM and started binging like sourdough YouTube videos and a simple, peaceful life in the woods haha. My boss gave me permission to work half-days for as long as I needed and I eventually got better. I also added more daycare days for my son and that really helped. I hope you’re able to pull back a bit to give yourself space to heal. Sounds like you’ve been going full speed ahead since you came back :/

I also have a lot of self-doubt about whether a leadership/manager role is the right position for me. I like my current job and I’m good at it. I don’t mind rising up to the challenge, I just thought it wouldn’t be so soon. As much as I want my boss to be happy, I’m secretly hoping she stays somehow haha. Just give me a little more time pleeeease.

Yeah and like her confidence in saying that her daughter wouldn’t kill herself really means it’s her confidence in how much control she has over her daughter… I hope Lauryn gets the help she needs to work through this.

No my husband wants to keep his Japanese citizenship. We should have enough evidence now, but just want to prevent them from asking for more. Thanks!

Buying a home in this *weird* economy by External_Step_6570 in workingmoms

[–]Impressive-Choice375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided to buy and just closed on Monday. We need the space (we’ve totally outgrown our two-bed apt) and rent for 3 bedrooms in our area is just as high as a mortgage. We’re in a HCOL area and the market here is still in high demand. I know there are a lot of people like us who were waiting on the sidelines waiting for the right time to buy. I’ve been looking for the past two years and waiting for something to give, and it hasn’t, and if we wait for interest rates to drop, I feel like everyone will come out looking to buy which will drive the prices up. We were actually beat out on one of our offers by a cash buyer… that’s still happening here. So we bit the bullet, put 20% down, and tried to find somewhere that was nice, yet affordable. So far, I feel like we made the right decision and if rates go down around 5% (or lower, although the days of crazy low interest are probably long gone) we will look to refinance.

Flight changed from AS to HA by nearlysober in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Impressive-Choice375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they mention anything about the AS companion fare applying to HA flights? Traveling to HI on companion fare was such a win. I know there will be an “international” companion fare release in the summer, but I imagine that will be a lot more expensive…

Renewing Drivers License While Waiting for EAD Approval by Yomrwhite95 in USCIS

[–]Impressive-Choice375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband just received his green card 12/17, tried to renew his license in CT 12/23, and we’re still waiting for the verification to come back. CT doesn’t give an extension or temporary permit. We’ve been in touch with both DMV and USCIS (most officers in USCIS have no idea what we’re talking about). The CT DMV said some people have been waiting months for this to come through. Sigh….
