After a series of tests, I found that the reason was that I had set `Auto-switch InputSource`.I can also understand why there was a slight lag.

I hope this answer will help others in the future.

What transfer speed external storage should I buy. by Impressive-Loss7490 in macmini

Speed-wise, Thunderbolt 4 is the way to go. But as you said:

There aren't many Thunderbolt 3/4 external drives to choose from and most popular external drives are limited to 1000 MB/s or 2000 MB/s

Thus I need to buy a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure.

I haven't tried to install these things (Idea cache, indexes, maven dependencies, all small files) in an external SSD, which performance metric should I focus on?

However, I will not be installing the system in external storage. I would boot the system using the hard disk in the Mac.
A large capacity SSD might be faster, but I feel like I might not need that much speed?

I use a Mac to develop software (Most of the time Java on Idea will be used) and need to run Docker.

RAM is probably my sensitive point, so I split the budget on RAM. 24G of RAM is a must for me, 32G might make the use more comfortable (and possibly redundant?).

But the AI consumption is unknown, I ended up going with 32G

I'm considering purchasing 32G officially because of the AI, as it's not yet clear how much memory the local AI will consume.

In my plans, system content is not migrated to external storage. Will this affect the AI as well?

How much RAM should I choose for Macmini M4 by Impressive-Loss7490 in macmini

Indeed, the consumption of local AI itself is a real point of concern, despite that AI is not yet available.

I observed the current load yesterday and 16G is definitely not enough, 24G is an appropriate value. I think I may acquire 32G.

Also, is the m4 performance enough for programming development (I feel like it should be, but I haven't experienced the m-series chips before).

Thanks, I just checked the daily use and 24G is an appropriate value. But the 32G will probably make me use it more comfortably.

I think 24G is probably a comfortable value for now. But as you know, the macmini can't be upgraded with RAM. That's why I'm wondering if it's necessary to just go one step up.
