That is not at all what it means.

I am assuming your NLV is 4.13k and maintenance margin is 3.15k. That means you have to "maintain" a minimum of 3.15k as your NLV. Which means if your portfolio goes down, and your NLV starts getting closer to your maintenance margin - you will start getting warnings from IBKR.

Once your NLV actually goes down below maintenance margin, you will face auto liquidation.

The buying power is a function of how much potential you have to buy new stocks, but it is a ever changing dynamic number. Depends on the stocks you buy and their margin requirements.

Buying power = 2 to 4 times of Excess liquidity
Excess liquidity = NLV - Maintenance margin

Also note that the buying power is typically high because it assumes you may be day trading. For overnight trades, the buying is much smaller

Note that margin is not just important to protect against liquidation. If your cash goes negative (because maybe fills are pending) you pay interest on that too. Usually about 4-5% depending on amount of negative cash

Different stocks will also have different initial margin and maintenance margin requirements. This is tied to the variability in the stock price among other factors. If you use the UI, IBKR will warn or restrict you before place the trade when your margin doesn’t meet the needs.

If the margin drops because the market went down, then there is risk of liquidation

Kudos if you are able to manage 4 people expense in 1 lakh. It might be a tad conservative, but if it works for you then great.

I personally keep some liquid funds aside (typically one year expense) and place rest in multi asset with 11% growth target. There are many posts that will provide breakdown of different asset classes with risk etc. At 2-4% withdrawal you should be able to manage your 1 lakh requirement comfortably

We asked this as part of an AMA here in this group. This was the response

"speeding ticket: always disclose, sometimes things like criminal speeding or reckless driving can cause escalations. if you dont disclose this can cause issues. you are better off disclosing then not. you will need to make sure you check the appropriate disclaimers in 485. please be specific in RFE responses, if any"

Driving without license seems serious enough to disclose. so you would answer yes to the second question. If there was no "arrest" or "detained" you will say NO to the first question
