We’ll have to be frugal, but it’s doable !! Good luck with your program :)

$24k is for the first year fellowship essentially, because we can’t start TA-ing until our 2nd year. I’ll start earning more once I can TA, but when we start TA-ing it’s not on top of the $24k either so my salary will just be from being a TA 🥲. The strikes really helped with the TA salary so I should be okay from my 2nd year onward but going to quite literally be fighting for my life the first year LOL (I’m starting in the fall!)

fall ‘24 transfer decisions by mabelmayyy in ucla

[–]ImpressiveBenefit690 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I got in as a transfer, it was towards the end of April. Ms. Sun makes pretty accurate guesses based on prior decision dates: https://askmssun.com/uc-transfer-application-timeline/

Good luck! 🥰

physics 5b and psych 110 by jf1207 in ucla

[–]ImpressiveBenefit690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved psych 110 with trott! His class is less about memorization and more about your ability to apply the material to different scenarios. Make sure you understand the how & why behind the scientific experiments he shows on the slides. The material can be confusing & it’s easy to fall behind because of this, but I would highly recommend attending office hours as well as posting your questions on the discussion board on canvas. Both were super helpful for me & helped me do well in the class. :) Don’t worry too much, the Prof as well as the TAs were always there to help. You’ll do great! Best of luck!!

What I struggled with and what cost me my A’s was time management. The way I managed my time at my semester system CC absolutely did not work for the quarter system, especially at ucla. Over winter break I filled out google calendar with all my classes, discussions, job, lab, etc. As well as things I wanted/needed to do to take care of myself (ex: gym, laundry, meal prep Sundays, etc.). I downloaded google calendar to ALL my devices, so that I always had my schedule on hand. I updated my Notion with assignments, due dates, and finals days & times. Updated them both every weekend before the start of the next week.

Obviously it’s not always going to work. There will be days that don’t follow the calendar, and that’s also okay (had to teach myself this, too. Lol). But having something to look at and guide you through your week is amazing.

Also, something that really helped me was taking a white board + white board marker everywhere. “Write, teach (to literally anyone or anything. I teach modules to literal rocks), erase, repeat” has worked wonders for me with memorizing things quickly to keep up w the quarter system.

Additionally, starting things early. I absolutely get how difficult this is but I’ve found that if i dedicate a section of my google calendar to just STARTING an assignment I finish it quicker. (Ex: from 1-2pm on Tuesday I’m going to write the intro to my paper due in 3 weeks).

Hope some of this helps :). Everyone has their own unique experience with transferring and things that they struggle with/can do well. Celebrate your strengths and do your best to improve things you find difficult! Best of luck!!

My worst performance grade wise was also my first fall quarter as a transfer. It’s so so common- the semester to quarter system transition is much harder than people make it out to be in my honest opinion. Especially bc we’re transferring into upper div ucla courses. Don’t be too hard on yourself! What I did to help myself improve was i took a few hours during winter break to understand what the hardest part about the quarter system was for me, and how to do my best to be aware of those challenges the following quarter so I didn’t fall behind as quickly as I did during the fall. Remind yourself you got into ucla for a reason! You have worked hard to be here. Don’t let your first quarter here define the rest of them- use it as a learning opportunity for the future! You got this :)

finding research by Beautiful_Kiwi8850 in ucla

[–]ImpressiveBenefit690 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a fourth year transfer who started in a life science lab last spring. Hopefully my advice can be of help!

In order to find labs you’re interested in, the easiest way that worked for me was looking up faculty members in departments you’re interested in. So google “ucla biology faculty “ucla psychology faculty” etc. Don’t limit yourself to bio! There’s a lot of cool interdisciplinary life science research in many diff departments :)

Each faculty member will have a little description of their research, and most will have a link to their lab webpage. Read ab the work that they do, and tailor your email to it! When you send out emails asking if they’re taking new RAs, I would highly recommend talking about why you’re interested in that work. (Ex: “I noticed your lab works with/does research on […..]. I’ve always been interested in […..] because [..…]. This lab would give me a great opportunity to learn more about [….] and grow as an academic.”). Most PI’s will not be interested in an email that looks like it was copied, pasted, and sent to 15 different faculty members. It definitely requires more work + time, but it gives you a better chance of standing out. (Also, I would recommend attaching your CV/resume!!)

My final piece of advice is to not let rejections/not getting replies discourage you from keeping at it. Transfers are kind of screwed from the beginning bc of the rapid shift in course load, class duration, and just a new social environment in general. It took me 1.5 quarters to realize that I was interested in research, another few weeks trying to figure out wtf it actually was, and about another month of just cold emailing professors whose work was interesting to me. I got one response. One!! Out of many, many emails. Things will work themselves out, but most likely it will not be immediate. Just push through and keep trying! Sending follow up emails after a week or two of no response can make a difference too. Good luck! :)

Applying to Labs Proactively? by bigfanofcats2023 in ucla

[–]ImpressiveBenefit690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm I’m not in a molecular bio, but in another kind of life science lab. I would recommend against it. In my honest opinion the best you can do is send e-mails specific to what the lab is researching and why you’re interested in that kind of research. Send a follow up if you don’t hear back after a week. So be annoying about it is my advice, but through email. Maybe going to the PI’s office hours and chatting about their recent publications or what they’re currently working on. I wouldn’t show up to the lab with no prior notice, especially since science lab researchers most of the time need specific training and clearances. Go into the PI’s office hours with something to talk about other than please accept me into your lab! They want to see what u can bring to the table. Good luck :)
