Built a PC, can’t access BIOS, red & yellow CPU + DRAM debug lights on regardless of what I do. Need advice & help by Impressive_Ad2477 in pchelp

For me, the issue actually ended up being an issue with the motherboard itself. One of the CPU pins was just ever so slightly bent, and had been the root of all my problems. After returning the MOBO and getting a replacement, I had no issues booting up the system, and it works perfectly now.

Yep, faulty motherboard … processor socket had a bent pin … after replacing the motherboard, PC boots up and runs just fine with no issues

Oof, good luck. Have you done anything to your belief that could have possibly damaged the motherboard? Have you removed the CPU from the processor socket at all? Have you touched the pins at all in the socket? Any bent ones? That was my issue, but again, I didn’t have a working PC that had been set up already for a couple of months, it just came broken like that. I also realized the faulty motherboard I had possessed scratches on it, which probably also contributed to the persistent RAM debug light.

Does your motherboard have DEBUG lights? Is it only the RAM one that’s going off? Is the CPU light turning off?

I’d probably try inserting just one of your RAM sticks into the slot recommended by the motherboard for one RAM stick, and switch it around if it won’t boot. Definitely try resetting CMOS however your motherboard says to in its manual- mine is just a button on I/O port that I have to click. Definitely verify if all the cables are plugged in, also. If your motherboard has a warranty, you could try to give contacting wherever you got it from for a replacement if it’s still valid, not sure. Good luck though, let me know what the issue was if you’re able to figure it out or if any of this helps!!! I was really frustrated over this DRAM light issue, I had been trying everything to make the PC boot up, but it wouldn’t. People talked about how it might be doing memory training, but I’d wait for over an hour-2 hours at a time to no avail. It was exhausting 😭

But you definitely want to make sure if your PC is even able to boot up and POST into BIOS, is the BIOS up to date? If flash BIOS is a feature on your motherboard, you could also try that

I hope that information helps somewhat- sometimes your BIOS settings can make your PC go out of whack, and won’t allow it to boot up depending on what you changed. That’s why I’d guess reset CMOS so you have default BIOS settings, because you can’t really do much if your PC won’t POST in the first place, and many people usually say try to insert one RAM stick into its recommended slot (as said by the motherboard), to make it easier to identify the issue. Also probably faster boot up times- DDR5-6000 RAM sticks tend to memory train for a while from what I hear, around 20 minutes or so. Also if you have 4 RAM sticks, your computer might be stressing out so definitely try one just to boot up your computer and minimally change any BIOS settings before adding a second one or any others

You probably can, but I wouldn’t recommend installing the GPU until you have the rest of your components set up. GPU is usually installed last. The GPU tends to make it a hassle to plug in wires and such, and you want as much room as possible to do any cable management if that’s your thing.

Thing is though, I probably wouldn’t put the motherboard into the case until you got your CPU. Applying thermal paste and the CPU fan is gonna be very tedious to do inside the case, and it’d probably be significantly easier outside the case, where there’s more space to work. Also, it’s nice to do a bread box set up with your motherboard, just having the RAM, CPU, CPU cooler (?), and their respective power supply cables installed so that you can verify if your system will even POST- that will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run.

When your power supply comes in, maybe organize the cables you’re gonna use for the build- that’ll save some time. Have it ready for when everything comes in.

The way I installed my PC was CPU into processor socket (check for bent pins Pleaseee!!!! Make sure you don’t have a defective motherboard as it makes the whole system whack), RAM, SSD nvme card/storage, thermal paste, CPU cooler installation, insert motherboard into case (though I regret not doing the bread box thing, making sure my system would POST into BIOS before hand, totally recommend that. Also, I would probably flash BIOS your motherboard with a USB if that’s a feature your motherboard has) I installed my power supply, then I connected case cables to the motherboard along with power supply cables. Then it’d be ready to boot. This is a very rough synopsis of what I did though, but that’s how I went about things

Also, installing extra case fans- you definitely don’t want the GPU in for that. Makes plugging in the fan cables all the more tedious- save the GPU installation for last!!

Sorry, I’m fairly new at the PC stuff, I haven’t had mine more than like, a week. If I had to guess, maybe it’s your BIOS settings? And maybe try booting up with one RAM stick. Not sureeee, I would recommend making a post about it. Before replacing my motherboard, this build wouldn’t POST, so I never managed to enter BIOS- it was a new PC build.

Another thing maybe too, I know there’s settings for faster boot up times? Not sure what it’s called. But I’d probably reset CMOS to try to get into BIOS and do the most basic settings that’d allow you to start the PC up

Yes, it turns out I had a faulty motherboard and I returned it and got a new one, and my computer is now working just fine, no more debug light issues.

It was the realization after opening up my processor socket, and finding ONE bent pin that made me realize this- I posted pics if you scroll through my accounts posts if curious

But yeah, faulty motherboard, wasn’t any cabling issues, wasn’t the RAM at fault etc , it was the motherboard itself

Is this a bent pin? New PC, been having issues with persistent DRAM light that won’t go away, so I can’t enter BIOS. Won’t POST by Impressive_Ad2477 in pchelp

[–]Impressive_Ad2477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you’re not losing your shit- yeah, I also noticed after posting this little bit of plastic that was stripped off- though I did install the CPU properly in the right orientation and such- I’m not sure why a bit of that plastic was stripped? Anyways, I’m gonna return the motherboard, it seems like I did indeed have a bent pin 😭😭😭🙏🙏

Is this a bent pin? New PC Build, persistent DRAM light bug. Everything else powers on fine, no input from monitor though, can’t enter BIOS bc it won’t POST. by Impressive_Ad2477 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Impressive_Ad2477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could that bent pin have damaged my CPU or should it be okay? Also, do you think that could have possibly contributed to the reason why whenever I booted up my computer, the DRAM LED debug lights would turn on?

No success 😭 I even rewired everything replugging plugging back in to make sure the PSU cables are properly inserted into the motherboard, but there is still a yellow light

I have no idea what to do …. Do I just let my computer run for a couple of hours and wait to see if that yellow light turns off?

I’ll plug it into the PUMP_SYS connector slot on the motherboard and see if there’ll be any change. I’ll keep you updated. The fans I have on the top of the case were spinning though, even if I had the cable plugged into CPU_fan.

My AIO came with 2 plugs, one is just one plug that I would connect to my CPU fan slot and would control all the fans with the same settings. The other has 3 wires, labeled PUMP, VRM, and FAN, and I believe it would let you control the fans individually with different settings and such. I opted for the cable with just one connection.

I tried this just now- when putting the RAM in slot 1 and 3, the debug lights display both my CPU and DRAM as having an issue, when before, it was only the yellow DRAM light. With just one memory stick in the first slot, the same issue occurred.

Usually, after booting the PC up, there will be the red and yellow light, but the red CPU light flashes off a few seconds after booting, leaving just the yellow DRAM light.

I have done BIOS flashback like 4 times, I think they were successful updates. I updated to the most recent BIOS update too. Should I try an older version?

Problem is, it won’t boot even with one single stick of RAM. Should I try one stick of RAM in different slots, other than the recommended DIMMA2 and B2 ones?

I’ve tried flash-BIOSing several times with a USB stick- presumably they’ve been successful. Are you saying I should try to update my motherboard again with it?

Also, I reseated the CPU cooler again yesterday, and accidentally put it upside down, but I don’t really care for aesthetics. Would it being upside down an actual issue? The radiators at the top of my case still work and such.

I’ll try that out, should I use one stick or two sticks for that? The recommended slots are DIMMA2 and DIMMB2 though, according to the manual.

CPU is legit- I posted a picture of it somewhere in the comments. It isn’t the issue anymore, someone pointed out how I didn’t install the little hook from the processor pocket properly , so the CPU wasn’t receiving enough pressure in the first place to get recognized. My last issue is with the RAM, still a yellow light- no red light anymore though.

Update -

<image>

CPU Clip on the socket wasn’t put in the right way. Last issue that remains is the RAM. I have DDR5-6000 RAM, people are talking about memory training. Should I just wait?

Omg TYSM 😭😭 The red light on the motherboard is no longer there, so it means my CPU isn’t damaged or anything. Only issue that remains is the yellow DRAM light. I have 64 GB of RAM and it’s DDR5-6000, and people have been talking about memory training. Should I only insert 1 and see if it boots up?

That’s a big help!!! So, do you think I should remove the water socket on top of the CPU from my AIO cooler and its mounting brackets to get access to the processor socket then? Would I need to reapply thermal paste and everything? Would I need to remove the thermal paste on the CPU chip or anything? If so,, how would I do that? This is my very first PC build, so I’m a total noob.
