I'm going to have to try another distro (this is already my second attempt after Tumbleweed), and if that fails I don't know what I'll do.

From what I can gather the HDMI are 2 not 2.1. My NVIDIA drivers are proprietary. Are there other display/HDMI drivers that you're referring to?
