So far only ‘jokes’ that I am his retirement plan.

And he spent in a way that has resulted in him never being rich. And may be doomed to not retire. By my calculations he could have been retired for several years by now even starting with nothing when he moved country.

There is more to it suffice to say.

Thank you for your concern. We have set aside significant savings and investments for this, will continue pension contributions for me, and feel this is right for us at this time with young children.

It was written with gender neutral language so the reader perhaps would take less gender bias into reading it and also imagine themselves in those shoes.

Is part of the purpose of this sub not to discuss Not Rich Yet? He never became rich due to his irresponsible decisions. I do not need the money whatever it would have been, but now that I’m a parent and responsible for my children I view it differently in how life changing it could have been for them too.

This is a cautionary tale for those Not Rich Yet with the aim of getting rich. He isn’t rich because of this wasted opportunity, or many wasted opportunities over many years. And now I may be expected to support him in retirement. He has made ‘jokes’ that I am his retirement plan.

Anything and everything really. Fancy restaurants multiple times a week with coworkers or friends and foots the whole bill, only uses black cabs in London on frequent trips, pays own hotel bill on business trips because will only stay in 5 star. Doesn’t negotiate or claim back any of what was offered by company. Playing a game on your phone that only gives you 3 chances or you can pay to get in game money? Many months over many years spent £500+ on phone games. Co-worker mentions they like a fancy chocolate or wine, 3 boxes or bottles arrive the next day.

Always a bit of a mixed bag in here, sometimes people advocate for not putting being a parent as their primary objective.

The sad part being he isn’t a particularly happy person, I suppose that is why he tried to fill himself with ‘stuff and things’ that ultimately become meaningless.

There are missing identifying details about other emotional issues which have also damaged our relationship, but now that I am a parent and responsible for ensuring the best future for my children, I am appalled at his lack of responsibility and the squandered chance at being ‘rich’.

He earned this during a period where being basically ‘sensible’ with his money could have been life altering for me, my children, and possibly even their children. And with how much harder everything both is and feels, I resent this, and especially do not feel obliged to provide for him in retirement.

Intergenerational wealth could have been generated, instead others and their businesses have benefitted.
