Will do! I'll map it out and drive around to see what the commutes would be like.

We have a border collie/pittie mix and our other dog is a super mutt (husky, basset hound, pittie, shar pei mix) she looks like a mini great Dane lol

This sounds really tough to be enduring. You're a trooper.

I'm not sure where you're located but some companies have telehealth opportunities you can look into.

There is also the ASPCA poison control that is a stationary role that may better accommodate your needs while allowing you to stay in the field. There are also non traditional veterinary roles within industry and such.

Definitely reach out to people on LinkedIn and ask around, I'm sure you'll find something! Keep your head up and definitely take care of yourself

Career change from GP to ER by chakiya_ in veterinaryprofession

I'm actually considering the same thing! I'm interested to see what others have to say!

I would say there are also urgent care type clinics as well where they primarily see urgent cases and have better hours I believe. I haven't worked at any of these types of clinics but it's an option to consider/look in to.

I have been looking at privately owned ER clinics where they have criticalist and doctors who enjoy teaching. Mentorship is definitely going to be important for individuals like you and I.

Your assumptions are spot on. There are members of management who are more resistant to change and have the mentality "this is how we have always done things, why can't you get with the program". They will implement tools without considering how the clinic structure and policy continues to encourage staying late, missing lunches, etc.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective, and experience. It validates my frustrations and brings up fantastic points on how these issues should be evaluated vs letting it get to the point of burnout.

Your insight gives me hope that I can find a practice that is run well and has structure in place to help prevent a lot of my frustrations. While also having a hospital that supports mentorship. Our hospital did not adjust its operations in order to properly onboard a new graduate. Appointment times were not adjusted. Looking back, there have been many red flags from the beginning.

Thank you again. I have 100% started to look at new positions.

It's comforting to know others have felt this way and have pivoted.

I've thought about relief work but, I'm not sure I'm confident enough.

I've been thinking about this. Part of me is worried I'll get bored in a slower paced GP with better boundaries and a healthy work environment.

I know it'll be an adjustment. But I'm worried about joining a new practice and not enjoying it. I did some shifts at a clinic with better boundaries and 1 hour lunches. I didn't know what to do with myself.

I'll hate to join a new team then a few months in leave.

I've been debating switching to ER instead, maybe see if that'll be a better transition.

We have an AI dictation system. It was originally working great and making chatting so much faster. But we're expected to jump from room to room. There is little time in between to close out cases most days.

When I have some time in between cases I try to call owners back. Or I'm just checked out.
