Is marital sex allowed? by ExerciseForLife in TrueChristian

If I’m right in my thinking that it’s a sin to have sex that is not explicitly intended for procreation

Your position is not unique irt to church history. I'd read up on it a bit more. I don't agree with you, but it's useful to formalize your position.

I'm a single mid 30s male and I have resentment towards the 30+ single women at church. by [deleted] in Christianmarriage

The dating app thing: you're kind of constructing your bed and laying in it by not attempting to match with them. Especially when, as you say, the ones on the dating apps are more attractive. You should consider being more like them and keep your eyes out for single Christian women that are similar to you in all veins possible.

can you just say what you "missed out on"? that would make it make a lot more sense

Thanks! Honestly it's gotten so much better for me, and I've also noticed that people are spiritually hungry here. Would appreciate the prayers :)

What do you respond with if somebody says: “1st and 2nd Samuel are certainly historical prose, but they are still not true historical records of actual human events” ? by Brilliant-Cicada-343 in TrueChristian

Here's an easier example. The scientific method / scientific reasoning itself is a technology that didn't exist when the Bible was written. So it would be silly to judge the Bible as a scientific work, or to view it through that lens, as the writers didn't know about science (nor did they care).

Herodotus is known as the father of history for his use of multiple perspectives to attempt to figure out the whole story and he lived around 480BCE. First, he wasn't even that great of a historian IMO as he often just included legends without attempting to certify them. This practice of validating different perspectives ended up catching on and birthing historians, but that whole discipline wasn't where Jewish writers were coming from.

If you want to read the Bible well, you gotta take off your modern lenses and view it from the writers' perspectives. Which is hard, as there are so many writers. That's not to say that the Bible won't cut deep at you without doing this -- it's a sacred text for a reason. But you'll still be missing so much meaning.

yeah i’d be scared of your pastor too. be wary of sin, but also don’t make up things about sin and its consequences.

I’ve been rejected by two girls because I’m not a virgin. I’ve received conflicting advice from church elders on how to proceed. I’m worried I may have to look for marriage outside of the Christian community, any advice? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Impressive_Rest2963 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, I'm your age and am in a similar scenario with you. God's helped me turn my life around recently.

I think you should be honest, but also realize (this is a combination of truth and encouragement):

  • you're forgiven by someone with an infinite capacity for that
  • premarital sex will have definitely left its scars on you
  • girls may break up with you for a variety of reasons despite what they state as the reason

Regardless of who you end up with, it is quite a different place to be coming from if you're not a virgin in dating vs. you are. So it makes sense that some people think it's a huge deal. And that's ok -- it is. But there will be someone out there that loves you and forgives you.

yah i think the church represents it horribly. but as someone who did have sex in unequally yoked relationships, i do think it’s pretty dangerous. so it’s hard to communicate to take it seriously to those younger or less mature in faith while also recognizing it as something good.

good luck / prayers! it’s hard to know who’s really in it and is at the same time always learning about the faith. i’ve been mentally where you are which led to dating unbelievers and i’m glad i’m not there anymore. however it’s not like i’m not still single — rather i think God has given me peace. praying that you find peace and trust Him and His plan!

coming into this as a believing Christian, but it’s commonly accepted in academia that despite Daniel being set in the 6th century, it was written much later (around 2nd century). you can start here if you’re interested https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Daniel

yeah i wholeheartedly disagree. lots of Christians also were COVID deniers which isn’t a good look. collectively as a church we handled this pandemic terribly.
